He was a famous official during the Northern and Southern Dynasties of China.
He wrote a book for his descendants in which he recorded ways to improve moral cultivation and some experiences and insights in personal life.
The book he wrote affected not only his children, but also many Chinese people in future generations.
There is a short story in the book as follows.
There was a scholar in a big city.
The scholar read many books and felt that his knowledge was very rich, so he was very proud.
One morning the scholar went to the market.
The scholar wanted to buy a donkey.
After choosing a donkey, the scholar negotiated the price with the donkey seller.
When the scholar and the merchant had finished negotiating, the scholar said to the merchant
Do we have to sign a formal contract to make this sale?
replied the businessman.
Since I was a young man, I have never signed a contract when doing business.
We all deal in cash, you give me money and I give you a donkey.
If you want to sign a contract, I can cooperate, but I have to hire a knowledgeable person to draw up the contract. We may not be able to trade today.
The scholar smiled and said to the merchant.
I am a very knowledgeable person and I can draw up a contract right now and we can trade in about 20 minutes.
The businessman agreed to the scholar's proposal and the scholar took out paper and a Chinese brush and began to draw up the contract.
Twenty minutes later, the scholar had written the contract and proudly read it to the businessman.
After listening to the scholar read the contract, the businessman asked the scholar in astonishment.
You have used many beautiful words and very advanced writing skills in this contract. The full text of your contract is over a thousand words long.
But I'm very confused, why didn't you mention in this contract that the item we were trading was a donkey?
After the businessman finished his question, some of the passers-by laughed.
This story is also a Chinese idiom. The literal translation of this idiom is that a knowledgeable scholar wanted to buy a donkey.
This idiom is used to describe a person's speech or article that is splendid but empty. This person's speech or article does not clearly grasp the main points he wants to express.
Dear friend, what inspirations or thoughts do you have after listening to this story?
Have you ever tried to show your ability but ended up revealing your ignorance? Has your father ever passed on to you the life mottos he has learnt?
I hope this story can give you some new insights.
