(Duanmu Ci) was one of Confucius' best
students and a successful businessman.
There is a story about him in the history
books.
Both he and Confucius were citizens of the
Kingdom of Lu.
The Kingdom of Lu was quite weak and many
of its people were taken captive to other kingdoms.
The king of Lu issued a law.
We should take the initiative and actively
help the people of the unfortunate Kingdom of Lu who have been taken captive to
other kingdoms, so that these people can regain their freedom and return to the
Kingdom of Lu.
All expenses incurred during the rescue
process will be fully subsidised by the Kingdom of Lu.
After seeing this law, Duanmuci took the
initiative to help several of his countrymen who had been kidnapped in other
kingdoms to return to the Kingdom of Lu.
When the king of the Kingdom of Lu wanted
to subsidise all of Duanmu Ci's expenses during the rescue process, Duanmu Ci
told the king
I am a successful businessman and very
wealthy, and I do not want this subsidy.
When Confucius heard this, he said to Duanmu
Ci
Your decision not to take this subsidy is
wrong.
Duanmuci asked Confucius very doubtfully.
May I ask what I have done wrong in this
matter?
Confucius replied.
When we make a decision or do something, we
must not only think from our own point of view, but also consider the effect of
our actions on the people around us.
The king has issued this decree in the hope
that all people in the Kingdom of Lu can actively help their compatriots who
have been taken captive to other kingdoms.
If you are a person who is not financially
well off, knowing that you can receive this subsidy, you will be willing to
help your compatriots who have been taken prisoner in other kingdoms.
You should choose to receive subsidies and
let other people in our kingdom know that as long as we help our fellow
countrymen, we will definitely receive subsidies.
They will be more active in helping our
compatriots who have been captured in other kingdoms.
If you choose not to receive subsidies
today, when the people in our kingdom see that you are not receiving subsidies,
they will think that if I help our compatriots in other kingdoms, I should not
receive subsidies. If I receive subsidies, others will think that I am a
money-loving person.
But if I don't receive it, the money I
spend to help my fellow citizens will put my own financial situation in a
difficult position.
I don't want others to think that I am a
money-loving person, and I don't want my own economic life to be in trouble, so
it is better not to rescue my compatriots who have been taken captive in other
kingdoms.

他與孔子都是魯王國的國民。
魯王國相當弱小，有很多魯王國的人民被擄到別的王國。
魯王國的國王頒布了一條法律。
我們應該主動積極協助那些被擄到其他王國的不幸的魯王國的人民，使這個人民恢復自由並回到魯王國。
營救過程中的所有花費魯王國會全部補貼。
(端木賜)看到這條法律後，他就主動幫助好幾個被擄到其他王國的同胞回到魯王國。
當魯王國的國王要補助端木賜在營救過程中所有花費時，端木賜對國王說。
我是一個成功的商人我非常有錢，我選擇不領取這筆補助貼。
孔子聽到這件事情之後，孔子便對端木賜說。
你選擇不領取這筆補助的行為是錯的。
端木賜很疑惑的問孔子。
請問這件事我哪裡做錯了?
孔子回答。
我們做任何決定與做任何事情時，除了站在自己的立場去思考外，也要考慮到自己的行動會對周圍的人們產生什麼影響。
國王頒布這條命令，他的目的是希望魯王國中的所有百姓都可以積極的去幫助那些被擄到其他王國中的同胞。
如果你是一個經濟並不富裕的人，因為你知道可以領取這筆補助，所以你就會願意去幫助那些被擄到在其他王國的同胞。
你應該要選擇領取補助，讓我們王國中的其他百姓知道，我們只要去救助自己的同胞，我們一定可以領到補助。
他們就會更加主動地去幫助我們那些被擄到在其他王國的同胞。
你今天選擇不領取補助，我們王國中的百姓看到你不領補助後，他們就會想，我如果幫助那些流落在其他王國的我們的同胞後，我也不應該領取補助，如果我領取補助，那麼會讓別人感覺我是一個貪愛錢財的人。
但是如果我不領取這筆補助，那麼救助我的同胞所花的這些錢會造成我自己的經濟情況陷入困境。
我不想讓別人認為我是一個貪愛錢財的人，我也不想要造成自己的經濟生活陷入困境，所以我還是不要去救助那些被擄到在其他王國的我的同胞比較好。
