Li Longji

He was the 9th king of China's Tang Dynasty. He reigned for 44 years. He was one of the most famous kings in Chinese history. His story is recorded in history books.

When he was 27 years old, he became the king of the Tang Dynasty after a very brutal political struggle.

He was full of ideals and longed to make the Tang Dynasty powerful.

He found a minister called Yao Chong, who was 34 years older than him, and said to Yao Chong

I hope to appoint you Prime Minister of the Tang Dynasty. Are you willing to accept this important position?

Yao Chong replied.

I am willing to serve our country, but if you want me to be Prime Minister, you must promise me ten things.

Li Longji asked.

What are the ten things you want me to promise?

Yao Chong replied.

The first thing is that I believe we should rule the people with kindness and justice.

There are many existing laws that are too harsh and unreasonable, so we should amend and reform the laws.

The second thing is that the national strength of our country is not strong enough at present, and the overall economic situation of our country is not good. Therefore, we should avoid conflicts with some kingdoms around the Tang Dynasty. We should first concentrate on improving the economy of the people and the country.

The third thing is that after the establishment of the Tang Dynasty, some kings trusted the eunuchs close to them. These eunuchs gained great power and caused many problems within the royal family. So we should avoid letting eunuchs have power.

The fourth thing is that after the establishment of the Tang Dynasty, many members of the royal family were involved in the political affairs of the country. Many of these royal family members had no talent, but they held very important positions. I think these royal family members would hinder our development. So we should avoid this situation.

The fifth thing is that we should enforce the law fairly and impartially. Many nobles and members of the royal family have not received the appropriate punishment after breaking the law. I think we should change this situation.

The sixth thing is that the current political atmosphere is very bad. Many officials will give expensive gifts to their immediate superiors. I think this will foster a culture of corruption, so we need to institutionalise and regulate it.

The seventh thing is that some kings before the Tang Dynasty spent a lot of money building temples. I believe that state funds should be spent on all ordinary people, and state funds should not be spent on these religious buildings.

The eighth thing is that I think you should respect the expertise of all ministers and fully empower us ministers, be polite to us, and treat us as partners to work with.

The ninth thing is that I believe that for a country to prosper it needs many honest ministers to make their suggestions. You need to set up a mechanism to encourage ministers to give you more suggestions that are helpful for the development of the country.

The tenth thing is that we should learn from the records in the history books and what actually happened to the previous kings of the Tang Dynasty. We should avoid the excessive involvement of the queen's family members in the political decision-making of the central government.

Li Longji said after listening to Yao Chong.

I fully agree with the ten suggestions you have made. I accept your request. I ask you to join me in building the Tang Dynasty. Let us lead the Tang Dynasty to prosperity together.

Li Longji fully authorised Yao Chong and many other righteous ministers. With the help of these ministers, the overall national strength of the Tang Dynasty became extremely powerful.

But a very unfortunate situation happened after Li Longji reached middle age.

After Li Longji had led the Tang Dynasty to its peak, he began to feel that he was very great. He thought that it was his own achievement that the Tang Dynasty had become so prosperous. He became arrogant and liked to be flattered, so some treacherous and flattering ministers began to enter the central government and gain power.

From the time Li Longji was 50 years old, the Tang Dynasty began to decline.

Dear friends, what inspiration or thoughts do you get after listening to this story?

Do you think there are areas in your company or country that need improvement? Have you ever let pride lead you from success to failure?

I hope this story can give you some new insights.
