the King of Qi invited a man of high moral character to the palace.
This person's name is (Yan Chu).
When the king saw Yan Chu enter the palace,
he immediately waved to Yan Xi and said
Come quickly to my side.
(Yan Chu) suddenly stopped at the gate of
the imperial palace.
(Yan Chu) waved at the king and said.
Come quickly to my side.
The king was stunned by this sudden
situation.
When the king's ministers saw this, they
rebuked (Yan Chu) loudly.
These ministers said.
The king is the supreme leader of our
kingdom, and you are just an ordinary citizen.
Your behaviour is very disrespectful.
(Yan Chu) said to these ministers with a
smile.
The King warmly invited me to come here,
and I felt the King's enthusiasm, so I accepted the invitation.
I came to the palace from so far away, the
king should have come to greet me.
(Yan Chu) turned around and said to the king
with a smile.
You want to see me because of my noble
character. You know that I am not a vain person or someone who fears power. You
should come to me of your own accord after seeing me. How can you be so proud
to order me to come to you?
When the king heard these words, he didn't
know what to say.
(Yan Chu) said.
China has had many kings from ancient times
to the present, but those kings who have made great achievements and are
remembered by later generations all have one thing in common: they are all very
humble.
When they encounter something they don't
understand, they will ask others for their opinion. Even if that person's
status is very low.
If they discover that someone is more
knowledgeable than they are, they will humbly seek advice from that
knowledgeable person.
They are noble but not proud, and they show
their respect for people of high moral character through their actions.
Having heard these words, the king nodded
in agreement. He humbly left his seat and walked over to (Yan Chu).
The king said
Your teachings are correct. I thank you for
your valuable advice. Please come with me to the palace. I would like to hear
more of your wise words.

國王熱情地邀請我來這裡,我也感受到國王的熱誠所以接受了這個邀約。
我從那麼遠方來到皇宮,國王本就應該主動過來向我問好。
(顏斶)轉頭微笑地對國王說。
你因為我的品德高尚所以想要見我,你知道我不是一個愛慕虛榮與畏懼權勢的人,你看到我之後應該主動過來,你怎會很驕傲地命令我到你的身邊呢?
國王聽到這些話,不知道如何應答。
(顏斶)說。
中國從古至今有許多的國王,但其中有大成就而且讓後代所紀念的國王,都有一個共同的特質,就是他們都很謙卑。
他們遇到自己不懂的事情,就會去請教別人的意見。縱使這個人的地位很卑下。
他們只要發現別人的學識比自已高,就會謙卑地去請教這些有學問的人。
他們身分高貴但是卻不驕傲,他們用行動表現出自已的對於道德崇高之人的尊敬。
國王聽完這些話後點頭表示同意,他很謙虛地離開自己的座位然後走到(顏斶)面前。
國王說。
你的教導是正確的,謝謝你的寶貴意見,請跟我一起進入皇宮,我很想要再多聽一些你的智慧的言語。
