Flying Squirrel Skills(鼯鼠之技)

During the Warring States period in China, there was a famous thinker by the name of Xun Kuang.

He is a famous scholar of Confucianism. He has many views that are different from other Confucian scholars.

He had many disciples, and his disciples actively spread his philosophical ideas after his death.

Later generations of scholars and politicians were very fond of his unique insights.

His students compiled the main points of his lectures into a book, including the following passage.

He once told his students.

You must specialise in knowledge and become professionals in the fields you are good at.

There is a small animal in nature called the flying squirrel.

The flying squirrel is a small mammal. This small animal is very cute.

The flying squirrel can fly between trees using a membrane on both sides of its body, but the distance it can fly is very short.

The flying squirrel can climb trees, but it climbs very slowly and cannot reach very high places.

The flying squirrel can swim, but it can only swim short distances, and if it falls into a larger river it will drown.

The flying squirrel can dig holes, but its claws are very short, so it cannot dig a large hole and hide in it when it is in danger.

The flying squirrel can run, but it runs very slowly, and almost any animal can outrun it.

The flying squirrel is an easy animal to catch.

Although the flying squirrel has many skills, when encountering a crisis, the flying squirrel does not have an absolutely outstanding skill that allows it to escape quickly and smoothly.

There are many people around us who are like this flying squirrel. These people have learned a lot of different skills. These people seem to be very talented, but they lack one skill that can make them truly financially independent.

The literal translation of this idiom is 'the flying squirrel's skills'.

This idiom is used to describe a person who has a variety of skills but is not very specialised in any of them.

(Flying Squirrel Skills)
