A meal is worth a thousand kilograms of
gold(一飯千金)
The name of the founding king of the Han
Dynasty in Chinese history was (Liu Bang), and the name of the most important
general who helped him found the Han Dynasty was (Han Xin).
(Han Xin)'s life story is very fascinating,
and his story is recorded in history books.
He was very poor in his youth. He liked to
play and didn't like to work. He had no goals in life, no professional skills,
and relied on his friends for support.
One day he didn't have anything to eat, so
he went fishing at the river, but he was very unlucky and didn't catch any fish
all morning.
At that time, there was a group of women
washing their clothes by the river. Han Xin chatted with them while he was
fishing.
From their conversation, the women learned
that Han Xin had not had a proper meal for several days. One of the women was
particularly kind, so she divided her lunch into two portions and gave one to
him.
After Han Xin tasted the sweetness, he came
back to fish the next day. The kind-hearted woman still shared half of her
lunch with Han Xin the next day.
This went on for more than a month. (Han
Xin) came to the river every day to fish, and the woman prepared a meal for him
every day.
One day a month later, after eating, Han
Xin said to the kind woman
I really appreciate you treating me to
lunch these days. When I have money in the future, I will definitely give you a
lot of money to repay you.
When the kind-hearted woman heard what he
had said, she spoke seriously to him.
I helped you today because I couldn't bear
to see you starve. My original intention was very pure, and I didn't expect
anything in return.
But there is one important thing I want to
tell you.
You are a young and strong man, but why
can't you take care of yourself? Why do you expect others to help you every
day? Do you want to live like this for the rest of your life?
These questions are very important and I
think you should reflect on your own behaviour and mentality.
After hearing this kindhearted woman's
words, Han Xin was deeply shocked.
That night, he reflected on his life and
realised that he had no goals or ideals. If he went on like this, he would lead
a mediocre and poor life.
He regretted his previous impracticality
and had a deep awakening and reflection. From the next day he changed his
behaviour and his attitude. He set himself a lofty goal and motivated himself
to change.
A few years later (Han Xin) became a famous
general, and he returned to his hometown and found this kind woman.
(Han Xin) gave her a thousand kilograms of
gold to thank her.
The literal translation of this saying is
that a meal is worth a thousand pounds of gold.
The "thousand kilograms of gold"
in this idiom means a lot of gold, not exactly a thousand kilograms of gold.
It is used to describe a person who uses a
large amount of money to repay someone who has done him or her a small favour.
Dear friends, what inspiration or thoughts
do you have after listening to this story?
Do you thank your family or others for
their kindness to you? Can you humbly accept criticism from others?
I hope this story can give you some new
insights.
(A meal is worth a thousand kilograms
of gold)
