He is as sad as if his parents were dead(如喪考妣)
In the Western Jin Dynasty of China, there
was a famous general named Zu Ti. His story is recorded in history books.
In 316 AD, after a pre-Han kingdom founded
by nomadic people in northern China captured the capital of the Western Jin
Dynasty, the king of the Western Jin Dynasty was killed, the Western Jin
Dynasty fell, and many lands in northern China were occupied by the pre-Han
kingdom.
After the fall of the Western Jin Dynasty,
a member of the royal family of the Western Jin Dynasty founded the Eastern Jin
Dynasty in southern China.
A year after the establishment of the
Eastern Jin Dynasty, Zu Ti led an army he had formed by boat across the Yangtze
River to northern China.
He vowed to reclaim the lands that once
belonged to the Western Jin Dynasty and save the people of the Western Jin
Dynasty.
Zu Ti used his wisdom to win several
battles. He also contacted and organised some of the warlords from the original
Western Jin Dynasty who were still in northern China. Under his leadership, he
reclaimed many of the occupied lands in northern China.
In 319 AD, the former Han kingdom in
northern China was wiped out by the later Zhao kingdom, and the army led by Zu
Ti formed a confrontation with the later Zhao kingdom.
As the military strength of the two sides
was almost equal, there was a brief period of peace and stability between the
Eastern Jin Kingdom and the Later Zhao Kingdom.
Although Zu Ti was on the front line, he
was very concerned about the political situation in the Eastern Jin Dynasty.
Because he controlled a very powerful
military force, the king of the Eastern Jin Dynasty did not trust him, and he
was worried about this situation.
The political situation in the Eastern Jin
Dynasty was unstable, and most of the ministers were busy fighting among
themselves instead of uniting to resist foreign enemies, which disappointed
him.
In 321 AD, Zu Ti fell ill because he was in
a state of tension every day and his mood was affected.
Before he died, a famous astrologer said to
him.
After looking at the stars in the sky, I
think you will die this year.
After hearing the astrologer's prediction,
he said
I had originally hoped to reclaim the
entire northern territory of the Western Jin Dynasty, but it seems that the
Creator will not give me this opportunity. It seems that the Creator will no
longer bless our Eastern Jin Dynasty.
After his death, many people in northern
China, which he had conquered, felt sad as if their parents had died.
The literal translation of this saying is
that he is sad as if his parents had died.
It is used to describe a person who is
extremely sad.
Dear friend, what kind of inspiration do
you have after listening to this story?
Do you think that a person's death can be
predicted in advance? If you knew you were going to die in a year, what would
you do now?
I hope this story gives you some new
insights.
(He is as sad as if his parents were
dead)
