In the late Tang Dynasty of China there was
a famous monk. His name was Qi Ji. There is a story about him in the history
books.
He was born in Changsha, Hunan Province.
His father was a farmer and he helped him herd cattle every day from the age of
seven.
He was very intelligent and loved to read.
In his spare time from herding cattle, he would try to write some poems to
record his life experiences.
The political situation in China at the end
of the Tang Dynasty was very chaotic. Wars broke out all over China and most
people lived a very hard life. He and his family were no exception.
Due to the influence of the social
environment at that time, he had to face life, death, reunion and separation
from a very young age.
There was a temple near his home and when
he grew up he became a monk in that temple.
After becoming a monk, he kept the habits
of his youth. He often wrote poems. His poems got better and better and he
became a famous poet.
One day he met a very famous poet called
Zheng Gu, who was 14 years older than him.
When the two of them met, they began to
talk about their experiences in writing poems and shared their own works. He
took out a poem he had written. The direct translation of the title of the poem
is as follows
In this cold season I suddenly feel the
breath of spring.
There are two lines in the poem. The
meaning of these two lines is that the streets in the village where I live are
covered with thick snow. When I got up today, I saw that there was a thick
layer of snow on the plum tree in the yard. Many plum blossoms are in bloom.
After reading the poem he had written,
Zheng Gu thought it was great and said to him.
Your poem is very good. When I read it, I
can feel your eagerness for spring to come.
But I think you can change "There are
many plum blossoms on a plum tree" to "There is already one plum
blossom on a plum tree".
Qi Ji gladly accepted Tao Gu's advice.
After transforming many plum blossoms into one plum blossom, he repeated the
poem he had written several times.
Suddenly, he knelt down in front of Tao Gu,
an etiquette that only students in ancient times would do to their teachers.
He said to Tao Gu
I admire you so much. After you suggested
that I change one word in my poem, the artistic concept of my poem suddenly
became extremely profound. I hope you can be my teacher.
Tao Gu said with a smile.
Don't be like that. I am just sharing my
feelings. I don't think my knowledge is enough to make me your teacher.
Qi Ji said respectfully to Tao Gu.
Because of one word, I think you are
qualified to be a teacher.
I think you are very knowledgeable and too
modest.
Although you only changed one word in my
poem, I can feel your profound knowledge from that word. You are very well
qualified to be my teacher.

中國唐王朝末年有一個著名的和尚，他的名字叫做齊己，歷史書上記載了一個他的故事。
他出生在湖南省的長沙市，他的父親是一個農夫，他七歲開始就每天幫忙他的牧牛。
他非常的聰明，他很喜歡看書，他在牧牛的空檔就會嘗試寫一些詩紀錄他的生活感受。
中國的唐王朝末年的政治情勢非常的混亂，中國到處發生戰爭，大部分的百姓都生活都非常的辛苦，他跟他的家人也不例外。
由於當時的社會大環境的影響，他從很小就開始必須面對活著、死亡、相聚與分離。
他家裡附近有一間寺廟，他長大後就到這間寺廟中出家當和尚。
他當了和尚之後仍然保持自己年輕時的習慣，他常常寫詩，他的詩寫得愈來愈好，他成為一個有名的詩人。
有一天，他認識了一個很著名的名字叫做鄭谷的詩人，鄭谷把他大14歲。
他們兩個人見面之就開始聊一些寫詩的心得與分享自己的作品，他拿出了一首自己寫的詩，這首詩的題目直接翻譯後的意思如下。
在這個寒冷的季節中我突然感受到春天的氣息。
這首詩中有兩句詩，這兩句詩的意思是我住的這座村莊中的道路上積滿的厚厚的雪，我今天起床後看到在院子裡那一株梅花樹上有很多梅花都開了。
鄭谷讀完他寫的這首詩後覺得很棒，鄭谷對他說。
你這首詩寫非常的好，我讀這首詩的時候完全可以感受到你迫切期待春天到來時的心情。
但我覺得你可以把”一株梅花樹上有很多梅花都開了”更改成”一株梅花樹上已經有一朵梅花開了”。
齊己很開心地接受了陶谷的意見，他把很多梅花更改成一朵梅花後，他又重複念了好幾次他寫的這首詩。
他突然跪在陶谷面前，這是一種古代學生對自己的老師才會行的禮儀。
他對陶谷說。
我太敬佩你了，你建議我改了我的這首詩的一個字後，我的這首詩的意境突然變得非常的高超，我希望你當我的老師。
陶谷微笑著說。
你不要這樣，我只是單純分享我的感覺，我認為我的學識還不夠，我的學識還不足以成為你的老師。
齊己很恭敬的對陶谷說。
因為一個字、我認為你有資格成為一個老師。
我認為你的學問非常的好，你太過謙虛了。
你雖然只改了我這首詩中的一個字，但從這個字中，我可以感受到你的學問非常淵博。你非常有資格成為我的老師。
