Deceive the king(欺君罔上)/Endangering the land and harming the people(蠹國害民)

At the end of China's Ming Dynasty, there was a famous writer called (Feng Menglong).

He wrote a collection of short stories.

This novel reflects the thoughts, feelings and values of ordinary people at that time.

There is a story in this book that is set in the Yuan Dynasty.

There was a scholar named (Humudi) who had a wonderful experience. He once travelled to the Underground Kingdom, where some evil people went after they died.

An official of the underground kingdom took him into the depths of the underground world, where he saw a very high wall and a very large iron gate. After entering this huge city, he saw that it was divided into several different areas. The evil people who had died were suffering different punishments for the crimes they had committed in their lives.

Hu Mudi first mentioned some of the famous treacherous and evil ministers in Chinese history. These ministers deceived the king and did many things that harmed the country and the people while they were alive.

These ministers framed some righteous ministers during their lifetime. These ministers enjoyed great honour during their lives, but after their deaths they went to this underground world. They wore iron shackles, they were naked and had marks of whipping on their bodies, a lot of boiling water was poured on them, they were tied to a copper pillar, their flesh was sliced by the wind like a knife, and their flesh was shattered by lightning. They ate hard pieces of iron, drank boiling copper and wailed in misery and despair.

The Underground Kingdom officials told Humudi that these evil officials would suffer like this forever.

The Underground Kingdom officials then took Humudi to several different areas.

Hu Mudi saw many different types of evil people suffering different punishments. Some were put into boiling water and boiled, some were burned by high temperature fire until their bodies were festering, and some were cut open and their internal organs dug out.

When Hu Mudi saw the tragic end of these villains, he was deeply shocked. He said to the official who took him to the underground kingdom, "I can no longer visit the underground kingdom. My heart has received a great shock. Please take me back to the hall where the king of the Underground Kingdom is. I want to end this visit.

The first idiom means to deceive the king.

The second idiom means to endanger the country and hurt the people.
