I was laughed at by those who knew better.(貽笑大方)
Zhuang Zhou, one of the most famous
thinkers and philosophers in Chinese history, wrote a story.
There is a famous river in the north of
China, the Yellow River. The name of the river god who controls the Yellow
River is (Bo). (Bo) felt that he was the king of all the rivers, and he felt
that he was very big.
The name of the goddess who rules the sea
is (Ruo).
When (Bo) saw (Ruo), (Bo) realised that he
was so insignificant, so (Bo) felt very ashamed.
(Bo) said to (Ruo).
There are a lot of people who have little
knowledge, but they think they have a lot of knowledge. They are very proud and
arrogant. Others laugh at them, but they don't know it. After seeing you today
I realised that I am such a person.
I have heard some people mock the ancient
Chinese sage (Confucius) for his lack of knowledge. I have heard some people
mock the ancient Chinese sage (Bo Yi) for his low moral character. I did not
believe that some people could be so ridiculous and arrogant. After seeing you
today, I realised that I am such a person.
I can see you today and I feel ashamed, but
also happy, because if I hadn't seen you, I might never discover my limitations
and ignorance, and I might always be ridiculed by those who have broad
knowledge. And I will never know myself.
The literal translation of this saying is
to be laughed at by those who have broader views.
This idiom is used to describe a person who
is laughed at by an expert or an informed person.
Dear friends, what inspiration or thoughts
do you have after listening to this story?
Have you ever discovered your own
limitations and ignorance? When you laugh at others, have you ever thought that
you might also be laughed at by others?
I hope this story can give you some new
insights.
(I was laughed at by those who knew
better.)
