Never met in this life(素昧平生)
At the end of the Ming Dynasty in China,
there was a famous writer called (Feng Menglong).
He wrote a collection of short stories.
This novel reflects the thoughts, feelings
and values of ordinary people at that time.
There is a story in this book that is set
in the Yuan Dynasty.
There was a scholar called Hu Mudi. One
night he was drinking Chinese rice wine and reading a history book.
He saw in the history books that some loyal
and upright ministers in the Song Dynasty were betrayed by some evil and
treacherous ministers. Those loyal and upright ministers were sentenced to
death, while those evil and treacherous ministers gained power and money and
lived long lives, so he felt very angry.
He drank a lot that night and slept in his
bed after getting drunk.
In the middle of the night, he suddenly
felt someone pushing him.
He reluctantly opened his eyes and saw two
men in black standing next to his bed. They said to him.
Our boss's surname is Yan. He has ordered
us to take you to him. You should get up quickly and go with us to see our
boss.
He asked, confused.
Who is your boss? Do I know your boss?
You said your boss' surname was Yan. I'm
sure I've never seen your boss before. Have you got the wrong person?
The two men in black said to Hu Mudi.
We are not mistaken, you are the person our
boss wants to see, get up quickly and come with us.
After saying these words, the two men in
black forcibly pulled Hu Mudi out of bed and walked out of his house.
Forced by the two men in black, Hu Mudi
left the town where he lived. After walking several kilometres, they entered
another town.
Hu Mudi felt strange because he had never
been to this city before. This city was very prosperous, with many pedestrians
coming and going, and many merchants doing business by the roadside.
After being forced to cross several streets
by the two men in black, Hu Mudi arrived in front of a palace. He saw some
words written on the palace. He suddenly realised that the place he was
standing was not the world he lived in. He had arrived in the Underworld. He
was standing in front of the palace of the king of the underground world. He
felt very afraid in his heart.
The literal translation of this idiom is
never met in this life.
This idiom can only be used to describe two
or more people who have never met. This phrase cannot be used between humans
and other living things.
This idiom is usually used when two people
meet for the first time.
Dear friends, what inspiration or thoughts
do you have after listening to this story?
Have you ever been forced to do something
you didn't want to do? Do you feel afraid when you arrive in an unfamiliar
place?
I hope this story can give you some new
insights.
素昧平生(Never met in this life)
