Standing and sitting, eating and drinking(起居飲食)
There was a famous poet in China's Tang
Dynasty. His name was Li He and he died at the age of 27.
According to a preface to his collection of
poems, it was only published 15 years after his death.
This preface records what he said to a good
friend called (Shen Ziming) before he died.
I am dying, I have no wife, son or
daughter, and you are my best friend. I now give you all the poems and sketches
I have ever made in my life.
I hope you will publish a book of my poems
for me after I die.
Shen Ziming agreed to Li He with tears in
his eyes.
After Li He's death, Shen Ziming didn't
publish the book of poems immediately.
He prepared it slowly, but as Shen Ziming's
work became busier and busier, Shen Ziming gradually forgot about it.
In 831 AD, 15 years after Li He's death,
(Shen Ziming) returned home one night after attending a banquet. He had drunk a
lot of wine, so he fell asleep as soon as he got home.
Shen Ziming felt thirsty in the middle of
the night, so he got up to drink some water. After he drank the water, he went
back to bed. He lay in bed for about ten minutes, but he couldn't fall asleep.
He felt very awake so he got up and went into his study.
He wanted to find some books to read in his
study and he saw a wooden box in the corner that had not been opened for a long
time. After opening the box, he saw the poems and drafts Li He had written
during his lifetime.
When he saw the poems written by Li He, his
thoughts immediately went back to his youth.
At that time, he lived with Li He. They
were in the same house in the morning and slept in the same house at night.
They ate and drank together almost every day.
He and Li He were both in their twenties at
the time, full of fantasies and hopes for the future.
He thought back to the months after Li He's
illness, and he thought back to the sadness he felt after Li He's death.
He remembered that Li He had given him
these poems before he died, and he remembered the promise he had made to Li He.
He found that he had actually forgotten
about it, and he felt very sorry.
He said to himself.
Fortunately, I thought about it again
tonight, and I will find a way to publish this collection of poems written by
Li He as soon as possible.
Li He is an imaginative and romantic poet,
and his poems should be known by more people.
Shen Ziming began to work on it that night.
He thought that if the book was to be published, it would be best if a famous
person wrote a preface for the collection of poems. He thought of a good friend
of his named Du Mu in the central government.
Du Mu's grandfather had once been Prime
Minister of the Tang Dynasty. Many of Du Mu's family members held important
positions in the central government. Most importantly, Du Mu was also a famous
poet.
At Shen Ziming's repeated request, Du Mu
later took on the task of writing the preface for Li He's collection of poems.
Fifteen years after Li He's death, his
collection of poems was published and distributed in the capital of the Tang
dynasty.
The literal translation of this idiom means
standing and sitting, drinking and eating.
It is used to refer to all the things a
person has to do in daily life.

(Standing and sitting, eating and
drinking)
