Without studying the classics, you cannot
gain experience and knowledge from them.(不學無術)
In China's Song Dynasty there was a famous
prime minister. His name was Kou Zhun. There is a story about him in the
history books.
At the age of 18, he passed the imperial
examination and joined the central government of the Song Dynasty as an
official.
While working in the central government, he
made several good friends, one of whom was called (Zhang Yong). (Zhang Yong)
was very scholarly and knowledgeable. He was 15 years older than Kou Zhun.
In 1004 AD, Kou Zhun became Prime Minister
of the Song Dynasty. He was only 43 years old that year.
(Zhang Yong) was the governor of Sichuan
Province in China at the time. When he heard the news, he told his friends.
Kou Zhun had excellent working ability and
moral character, and it was the right choice for the king to make him prime
minister.
I think Kou Zhun has two shortcomings that
need to be improved: his knowledge is not enough, and his ability to
communicate and coordinate with others needs to be improved.
In 1006, Kou Zhun offended some ministers
because of his impartial attitude, and these ministers spoke ill of him in
front of the king, so he was transferred to Shaanxi Province to serve as an
official.
In the same year, Zhang Yong was
transferred back to the capital from Sichuan Province, and he passed through
Shaanxi Province on his way back to the capital.
Kou Zhun took this rare opportunity to
invite Zhang Yong to dinner.
After they had both finished eating, Kou
Zhun said to Zhang Yong
You are 15 years older than me and I feel
like you are my brother. Since I started working in the central government, you
have given me many important suggestions and reminders. After this brief
reunion, I don't know when we will meet again. Before we part, I would like to
ask you a question.
Do you think there are any areas where I
need to improve?
Zhang Yong said to him with a smile.
You can read history books, and I suggest
you read the biography of a Han dynasty minister named Huo Guang.
That night, Kou Zhun took out Huo Guang's
biography and read it carefully.
After reading it, he smiled and told his
family.
Now I know why Zhang Yong told me to read
Huo Guang's biography.
In Huo Guang's biography it says that
because Huo Guang did not read the ancient classics, he did not gain the
valuable experience and knowledge of interpersonal communication and moral
cultivation from the ancient classics.
Upon reflection, I think that Huo Guang's
shortcomings are my shortcomings. Zhang Yong gave me a very good suggestion.
The literal translation of this idiom is
that one cannot gain experience and knowledge from classical books without
studying them.
It is used to describe a person who does
not study hard and therefore has no professional skills.
Dear friends, what are your feelings or
thoughts after listening to this story?
Do you have job skills? If you don't have
professional skills, when will you start to study actively?
I hope this story can give you some new
insights.
(Without studying the classics, you
cannot gain experience and knowledge from them.)
