There was a very famous official in China's
Eastern Han Dynasty. His name was (Kong Xi). There is a story about him
recorded in history books.
Kong Xi commented on the life of King Liu
Che of the Western Han Dynasty. He believed that Liu Che was a good king when
he was young, but when Liu Che grew old, he became superstitious and
suspicious, and the Western Han Dynasty gradually declined from prosperity.
The king of the Eastern Han Dynasty
believed that Kong Xi's statement was slandering King Liu Che, so he ordered
his arrest.
In prison, Kong Xi wrote a letter to the
king of the Eastern Han Dynasty. The general meaning of the letter is as
follows.
If we say that someone has done something
bad, but the truth is that this person has never done these things, then this
is slander.
King Liu Che's life is recorded in the
country's official history book. The information I use to comment on King Liu

If a king does a good job, the people of
the whole country will praise him. If a king does a bad job, the people of the
whole country will criticise him. I think this is a very natural phenomenon.

you hear that there are areas where you need to improve, you will humbly adjust
your behaviour.
You are a tolerant and generous person, and
you are even less likely to punish me for my honest words.
If you condemn me to death because of what
I have said, then I think it will have a very serious consequence, which is
that in future no one will dare to speak honestly or express upright opinions.
Everything I have said has a basis. Liu
Che's life has been clearly recorded by historians.
I am writing this letter to you today
because I believe that my arrest was not ordered by you, but by some officials
in the Ministry of Justice.
These officials from the Ministry of
Justice thought that I had insulted King Liu Che, so they arrested me.
I believe that the charges they brought
against me are unfounded, and I feel wronged, so I harbor hatred. I hope you
can find out the truth and order my release. I know you are a capable and
clear-headed king, and you can tell if I have made a mistake in this matter.
I believe you will make the right decision,
knowing that all your decisions will be recorded by historians.
