was a famous minister in China's Eastern Han dynasty. His name was Gong Shamu.
A story about him is recorded in history books.
When
he was young, he lived alone in the mountains. One day, while he was studying,
there was a sudden gust of wind and a clap of thunder. He heard someone calling
his name outside. About five minutes later, the door opened and a very
strange-looking person entered the house. Intuitively sensing that this person
might be supernatural, he remained calm and continued to study.
The
strange man stayed for about ten minutes and then left.
This
incident demonstrates his stability and determination.
He was
a very learned man. He was an expert in astronomy and could predict changes in
the human world by observing changes in the stars.
Because
of his knowledge, many people came to visit him on the mountain and he met a
lot of people this way.
One of
his good friends is Wang Zhong. Wang Zhong is a very wealthy man who often
comes to chat with him.
One
day, Wang Zhong said to him,
'You live
in a desolate mountain, eat such simple food, and wear such plain clothes every
day. Do you want to change?'
We
have known each other for a long time, and I think you are a very talented
person. If you're interested, I'd be willing to spend money and use my
connections to get you an official position in the central government.'
He
replied to Wang Zhong with a smile.
'I am
living a happy life now. I believe that how much money and status one has in
life is all predetermined by God. If God gives me a lot of money, then I will
naturally have the opportunity to earn a lot. Likewise, if God gives me a very
high status, I will naturally have the opportunity to attain it.
I
don't want to interfere with God's plans. Thank you for your kindness. You can
