During the late Ming dynasty in China, a
famous writer named Feng Menglong wrote a collection of short stories.
One of these stories is set in the Tang
Dynasty.
In Shandong Province, there was a highly
knowledgeable scholar named Xiao Yingshi.
He passed the national imperial examination
at the age of 19 and became famous in his city at a young age.
After passing the examination, he entered
the central government.
However, a few months later, he offended
the Tang Dynasty's prime minister.
He was dismissed and returned home. He was
very dissatisfied and felt wronged. His mood was bad, but he was unable to
change it, so he became very irritable.
He would easily become angry over trivial
matters, and the servants in his household would anger him if they said or did
something wrong.
When he was angry, he lost his temper. He
would pick up whatever he could find to beat the servants who made mistakes.
The servants left his house one by one.
A few months later, only one servant
remained. His name was Du Liang.
Du Liang was about 20 years older than Xiao
Yingshi. He had taken care of Xiao Yingshi for more than 20 years.
Having had no chance to study himself, Du
Liang admired educated people. Xiao Yingshi passed the imperial examination at
the age of 19, which made Du Liang admire him even more.
When Xiao Yingshi was angry, he would beat
people, and Du Liang was often the recipient of these beatings.
However, Du Liang did not resent Xiao
Yingshi for beating him. In fact, he defended Xiao Yingshi.
He once told his cousin:
'Xiao Yingshi was a very kind person by
nature.' He was very smart and knowledgeable. Sometimes, however, he could not
control his anger and would beat people, but he was a good person at heart, so
we should forgive him.
Xiao Yingshi was a rare and intelligent
man. He is extremely knowledgeable and can write a great article in a very
short time. I admire him very much and would be happy to be a servant in his
house for life.
Xiao Yingshi once told himself that he
should treat this loyal old servant, who had been with him since childhood,
well. However, he could not control his anger or his actions rationally.
Whenever Du Liang made a mistake, Xiao
Yingshi would lose his temper. He would pick up whatever was to hand and beat
Du Liang with it. Du Liang was often beaten to the point of skin rupture and
muscle tearing.
Despite being beaten by Xiao Yingshi, Du
Liang endured the pain and continued to serve him with a smile. He was very
loyal to Xiao Yingshi.
This idiom literally means 'skin rupture
and muscle tearing'.
It is used to describe a person who has
been seriously injured.

杜亮沒有機會念書，所以他很敬佩那些有學問的人。蕭穎士19歲就通過科舉考試，所以杜亮非常的崇拜蕭穎士。
蕭穎士生氣的時候對打人，杜亮也常常被打。
杜亮沒有因為自己被打而怨恨蕭穎士，相反的，他替蕭穎士辯白。。
他曾對他的堂弟說。
蕭穎士的本性是一個很善良的人，他很聰明又很有知識，他時候會因為生氣而控制不住自己打人，但是他的本性是好的，所以我們應該要原諒他。
蕭穎士是一個非常罕見的聰明人，他的學識很豐富，他可以在很短的時間內寫出一篇非常棒的文章，我非常的崇拜他，所以我願意一輩子在他家當僕人。
蕭穎士曾經對自己說我應該要好好的對待這個從小陪伴我的忠心的老僕人，但是他沒有辦法理性地控制自己的怒氣與行動。
當他看到杜亮辦事犯了錯誤時，蕭穎士仍舊會失去理智，他仍舊會隨手拿起手邊的東西爆打杜亮，杜亮常常被打的身上的皮膚破裂而且肌肉撕裂。
杜亮雖然常常被蕭穎士打傷，但是他仍就會忍著疼痛露出微笑服侍蕭穎士，他對蕭穎士仍舊非常的忠心。
