During the Ming Dynasty in China, a famous
writer named Feng Menglong wrote a collection of short stories.
One of these stories is set in the Tang
dynasty.
In Shandong Province, there lived a highly
educated scholar named Xiao Yingshi.
His servants would make him furious if they
said or did something wrong.
When this happened, he would lose his
temper and beat the offending servants with whatever he could get his hands on.
The other servants left one by one, until
only one servant, Du Liang, remained.
When Xiao Yingshi was angry and had no
other servants to take out his frustration on, Du Liang was beaten more and
more violently.
Du Liang's relatives tried to persuade him
to leave, but he believed that Xiao Yingshi was a very talented and literate
person, so he insisted on staying to work for him.
About two years later, Du Liang's physical
condition worsened because he was often beaten by Xiao Yingshi. He experienced
long-term pain in many parts of his body, his physical strength deteriorated,
and he was extremely tired every day.
After several months of this, his condition
worsened. He could no longer get up and was confined to bed all day.
Although Xiao Yingshi often beat Du Liang
when he was angry, deep down he relied on him very much. When Du Liang fell
ill, Xiao Yingshi immediately invited several of the best Chinese medicine
doctors to his house to treat him. After they prescribed some traditional
Chinese medicine, Xiao Yingshi personally boiled it for Du Liang every day. He
took great care of Du Liang every day, but his condition did not improve after
taking the medicine. Two months later, Du Liang passed away.
Xiao Yingshi was devastated and helped Du
Liang hold a simple funeral.
After Du Liang's death, Xiao Yingshi wanted
to find a new servant, but because everyone in the city knew he was a violent
man, no one applied for the job.
Xiao Yingshi was left to live alone. He had
to prepare three meals and clean his house by himself. He was not used to it
and was very tired. He felt even more deeply that Du Liang had sacrificed a lot
for him.
He still maintained the habit of reading
every day. Sometimes, when he gained a lot from reading, he wanted to share it
with Du Liang. Seeing the chair Du Liang had used in his lifetime made him so
sad that he shed tears.
Two months after Du Liang's death, Xiao
Yingshi met Du Liang's cousin by chance.
Du Liang's cousin said to Xiao Yingshi,
'My cousin respects you very much. He
thinks you are a very literate and talented person, and he still insists on
staying in your house to work.'
When Xiao Yingshi heard this, his tears
flowed like spring water.
He cried loudly and said to Du Liang's cousin,
'I can only study; I can't do anything
else. My life is not easy. I always feel frustrated. I don't think anyone
understands me. I feel like no one sees my talent, so I complain about
everything that happens to me and treat the people around me badly.
I now realise that Du Liang is the person
who understands me the most. He recognised my talent and was always there to
support me, but I ignored him and often beat him, which resulted in his early
death. I regret this so much now and I am very sorry for what I did to Du
Liang.
After Xiao Yingshi said these words, he
suddenly spat out several mouthfuls of blood. He fell ill from that day
onwards, and his condition worsened. Two months later, Xiao Yingshi also died.
In his will, he wrote that he hoped to be
buried next to Du Liang's grave so that he could be with him forever after
death.
This idiom means tears pouring out like
spring water.
It is used to describe a person who is very
sad.

他在暴怒的情況下會失去理智，他會隨手拿起手邊可以拿到的任何東西來暴打那些犯了錯的僕人。
蕭穎士家中僕人們一個一個的離職，他家中最後只剩下一個名字叫做杜亮的僕人。
當蕭穎士生氣的時候，他沒有別人的僕人可以發洩情緒，所以杜亮愈來愈常被蕭穎士暴力毆打。
杜亮的親戚勸他離職，但是杜亮認為蕭穎士是一個很有文學素養而且很有才華的人，所以他仍然堅持要留在蕭穎士家中工作。
杜亮的親戚勸他離職這件事情發生了大概兩年後，杜亮因為常常被蕭穎士毆打，所以他的身體狀況愈來愈不好，他的身體很多地方都長期的疼痛，他的體力愈來愈差，他每天都覺得非常的疲累。
這種不舒服的情況持續了幾個月後，杜亮的病情愈來愈惡化，他沒有辦法起床，他整天都只能躺在自已的床上。
蕭穎士雖然常常在生氣時打杜亮，但是他的心中其實非常的依賴杜亮，他看到杜亮病倒之後，他就立刻找了幾個最好的中醫師來到他家幫杜亮看診，這些中醫師開了一些中藥後，蕭穎士每天親自為杜亮熬煮中藥，他每天都很細心的照顧杜亮，但是杜亮的病情並沒有因為吃了這些中藥而好轉，兩個月後，杜亮過世了。
蕭穎士很悲傷，他幫杜亮舉辦了一場簡單的喪禮。
杜亮死後，蕭穎士想要再找一個新的僕人來服侍自己，但是因為他會打人的這件事情整座城市中的人都知道，所以一直沒有人來應徵。
蕭穎士每天自己孤單的生活，他要自己準備三餐，他要自己打掃整理他的家，他很不習慣而且覺得很累，他更深切的感到杜亮對自己付出了非常的多。
他還是維持每天念書的習慣，他有時候念書很有收穫的時候，他轉頭想要跟杜亮分享，他看到杜亮生前專用的那張椅子，他就難過到流下眼淚。
杜亮死了兩個月後，在一次偶然的機會中，蕭穎士與杜亮的堂弟見了一面。
杜亮的堂弟對蕭穎士說。
我的堂哥很尊敬你，他認為你是一個很有文學素養而且很有才華的人，所以他仍然堅持要留在你家中工作。
蕭穎士聽到這些話後，他的眼淚就如同泉水般湧出。
他大聲地哭泣，他對杜亮的堂弟說。
我這輩子只會念書，我其他甚麼事情都不會，我的人生過得並不順利，我一直覺得很失意，我認為都沒有人理解我，我認為都沒有人看到我的才能，所以我對我生命中所發生的一切事情充滿抱怨，我用憤怒的態度去對待我周圍的人。
我現在才知道原來那個最理解我的人就是杜亮，他認同我的才能，他一直待在我的身邊支持我，但我竟然忽略的他的存在，我竟然常常打他，所以他才會那麼年輕就過世了，我現在非常的懊悔，我對不起杜亮。
蕭穎士說完這些話後，他突然從口中吐出了好幾口的鮮血，他從那天開始生病，他的病愈來愈重，兩個月後，蕭穎士也死了。
他的遺囑中寫著，我希望可以把我屍體葬在杜亮的墓地旁邊，我希望死後可以永遠跟杜亮在一起。
