Su Shi was a renowned politician and
connoisseur during the Song dynasty in China. He was also an exceptional writer
and calligrapher. He is one of the most beloved poets in Chinese history.
He was twice assigned to serve as an
official in Hangzhou, a city located in China's Zhejiang Province. To the west
of this city there is a large lake. This beautiful lake is known as West Lake.
During the Spring and Autumn Period of China,
Hangzhou and its surrounding areas belonged to the Kingdom of Wu.
During this period, there was a very famous
beauty. Her name was Xi Shi. She was considered one of the four most beautiful
women in ancient China.
Su Shi once wrote a poem to praise West
Lake. This poem, which contains two groups of four-word sentences, has been
widely used by later generations. These two groups of sentences have become
idiomatic expressions.
The poem's general meaning is as follows:
West Lake is beautiful on a sunny day. The
abundant lake water sparkles in the sunshine.
West Lake is also beautiful on rainy days,
when the green mountains that surround it on three sides are covered in white
mist.
Someone asked me whether I prefer West Lake
on sunny or rainy days.
I think West Lake is like the ancient
Chinese beauty, Xi Shi. I think Xi Shi would be beautiful with either light or
heavy makeup. The two types of makeup evoke different feelings, but both are
