A fair, selfless and open-minded person.(正大光明)
During China's Northern Song dynasty, there
was a famous minister named Fan Zhongyan. Not only was he a renowned writer, he
was also a talented military strategist.
His loyalty and integrity earned him the
admiration of generations of Chinese people.
History records a story about him.
One day in 1033 AD, the empress and several
concubines were arguing. During the mediation, the king was accidentally
injured by the empress. Enraged, the king ordered that the empress be demoted
to the status of a common concubine.
The ministers in the central government
were divided over the king's decision.
The prime minister, Lü Yijian, supported
the king, but Fan Zhongyan opposed the decision. This incident led to a fierce
conflict between the two men, which strained their relationship for years to
come. Lü Yijian also used his influence to suppress Fan Zhongyan.
A few years later, however, Lü Yijian
suddenly felt the need to mend his relationship with Fan Zhongyan and took the
initiative of speaking well of him in front of the king.
Upon hearing this, Fan Zhongyan readily
accepted Lü Yijian's gesture of goodwill and returned to the central
government, where he assumed a prominent position.
Zhu Xi, a renowned Southern Song dynasty
scholar, commented on Fan Zhongyan as follows:
Zhu Xi said:
'Fan Zhongyan was a fair, selfless and
open-minded person.' He understood that, despite their differing positions and
philosophies, they shared the same goal: to strengthen and prosper the Song
Dynasty. Therefore, Fan Zhongyan graciously accepted Lü Yijian's kindness and
chose to reconcile with him.
This incident demonstrates Fan Zhongyan's
great character.
The idiom translates as 'a person who is
fair, selfless, and open-minded'.
Dear friends, what insights or thoughts
have you gained from this story? Have you ever been oppressed by someone? If
you were Fan Zhongyan, would you reconcile with your oppressor?
I hope this story provides you with some
new insights.
(A fair, selfless and open-minded
person.)
