'Confucius' is a respectful name for him.
He was an outstanding educator. He is one
of the most influential thinkers in Chinese history.
He had more than 3,000 students, 72 of whom
were particularly outstanding.
One of these students was Yan Hui, who was
30 years younger than Confucius.
Yan Hui was Confucius' favourite student.
The Analects of Confucius is a book that
records stories about Yan Hui.
Confucius once publicly praised Yan Hui in
front of all his students.
Confucius said:
Yan Hui lived in poverty. He usually ate
only a little rice for each meal and drank only boiled water every day.
He lived in a very simple house in a narrow
alley.
Most people would lament their own
difficulties in life and envy rich people if they were as poor as him.
But Yan Hui never envied others; he was
happy every day.
His heart was content and strong; the
external environment could not affect him.
Confucius once asked a student named Zi
Gong a question. .
Confucius said:
'You and Yan Hui are both students who make
me very proud. You both like to ask questions, and you are both very humble.
You both have good moral character and can apply the knowledge you have learned
to your daily life.
Compared with Yan Hui, who do you think is
smarter and better?
Zi Gong answered.
'This question is very simple. Yan Hui is
smarter and better than me. He has a strength that I can't compare with.
Confucius asked with a smile.
'In what way do you think Yan Hui is better
than you?'
Zi Gong replied. 'Yan Hui can infer ten
things related to one thing after hearing it, but I can only infer two.'
Confucius said to Zi Gong with a smile.
I think your self-evaluation is accurate.
This idiom means that after hearing one
thing, you can infer ten related things.

孔子有一次當著所有學生們的面公開讚美(顏回)。
孔子說。
顏回生活很貧困，他通常每餐都只能吃少許的米飯，他通常每天都只能喝白開水。
他住的地方很簡陋，他家在一條狹小的巷子裡面。
絕大部分的人若是像他一樣的貧困，那麼這些人都會悲嘆自已的生活困難，那麼這些人都會羨慕其他有錢的人。
但顏回從來不羨慕別人，他每天活得很開心。
顏回的內心知足而且他的內心強大，外在的環境無法影響他。
孔子有一次問他的一個名字叫做(子貢)的學生一個問題。。
孔子說。
你與顏回都是讓我感到非常驕傲的學生，你們都很喜歡發問而且你們都非常的謙虛，你們兩個人的品德都很好，你們能夠把你們所學到的知識實際的運用在你們的日常生活中。
你認為你跟顏回相比，你們兩個人中、誰更聰明誰更更優秀呢?
子貢回答。
這個問題非常的簡單，我認為顏回比我聰明又優秀，顏回有一個強項更是我比不上的。
孔子笑著問。
你認為顏回在哪方面比你更棒呢?
子貢回答。
顏回聽到一件事情後可以推知與這件事情相關聯的十件事，而我在聽到一件事情後、只能推知道與這件事情相關聯的兩件事情罷了。
孔子笑著對子貢說。
我認為你對你自己的評價非常準確。
