Covering a person's ears and eyes.(掩人耳目)
The Song dynasty in China is divided into
the Northern Song dynasty (960–1127 AD) and the Southern Song dynasty
(1127–1279 AD).
The eighth emperor of the Northern Song
Dynasty was Zhao Ji, and the dynasty ended during his reign.
Zhao Ji is considered to be one of the most
famous artists in history. He was a renowned painter, calligrapher, poet,
lyricist and collector. Although he was very talented and had refined tastes,
Zhao Ji is also recognised as the worst king in Chinese history at managing the
country.
The officials in the central government
under his leadership were extremely corrupt. They colluded with local evil
forces to persecute kind people at the bottom of society.
This novel is based on the late Northern
Song dynasty.
The following short paragraph is taken from
this novel.
Zhao Ji trusted several ministers around
him very much. They flattered him and catered to his preferences, doing things
he liked. These ministers were cunning and evil. They told Zhao Ji:
'The palace is too boring. 'We will take
you to the capital to have some fun.' You will definitely find it very
interesting.'
Thinking this suggestion was a good one,
Zhao Ji put on the clothes that rich people wore at that time and went to the
capital to play with the ministers.
The ministers took him to the most
exclusive karaoke bar in the city. There, he met the most beautiful singing
girl. He had so much fun that he stayed at her home that night and didn't
return to the palace until morning.
A very upright and loyal minister found out
about this.
The minister said to Zhao Ji, "Your
status is very noble.
'Your status is very noble. You should not
leave the palace lightly, nor spend the night at a singing girl's home.
'You must never leave the palace again.
What if people find out what you did? What if they find out about your
behaviour? We can't stop them from talking about it. We can't cover the ears
and eyes of every citizen.
This idiom means to cover a person's ears
and eyes.
Dear friends, what thoughts or inspiration
do you have after listening to this story?
Before doing something, do you consider
whether it will affect your image? If you were Zhao Ji, would you take the advice
of this honourable minister?
I hope this story has been useful.
(Covering a person's ears and eyes.)
