Explanation of purpose and significance.(開宗明義)
Confucius's real name was Kong Qiu.
'Confucius' is a respectful name for him.
He was an exceptional educator. He is one
of the most influential thinkers in Chinese history.
He had more than 3,000 students, 72 of whom
were particularly outstanding.
One of these students was named Zeng Shen,
who was 46 years younger than Confucius.
Zeng Shen is not naturally intelligent, but
he studies very hard and diligently. He later became a key figure in the
Confucian system.
Confucianism has a very important classic
text called the Xiao Jing.
This book contains just over 1,800 words.
It mainly records the dialogue between Confucius and Zeng Shen. In these
dialogues, Confucius explained to Zeng Shen the core value of Confucianism:
(filial piety).
Filial piety is a core value in Chinese
culture. This term has a rich connotation. It represents the attitude and
actions of children towards loving, obeying and caring for their parents and
elders. This respect for parents and elders extends beyond the material to the
spiritual realm.
Confucius believed that 'filial piety' was
the most fundamental moral concept and the foundation of education and
influence. Everyone in society, from kings and nobles to ordinary citizens, has
a specific way of practising filial piety that suits their social class and
living environment.
If everyone in a society understands and
practises this moral concept, the society will be orderly, stable and
continuously improving.
This book, which contains more than 1,800
words, is divided into eighteen chapters, the first of which explains the
purpose and significance of the text.
In this chapter, Confucius explains the
importance of 'filial piety'.
Confucius believed that a person with the
virtue of filial piety would cherish their body, respect their parents, be
loyal to the leaders of their kingdom, pursue noble life goals, and lead a
positive life.
As this is an important Confucian text,
many of its phrases have become idioms commonly used by Chinese people in later
generations.
The title of the first chapter of this book
has become an idiom in its own right.
Its direct translation means 'to explain
the purpose and significance'.
It is used to describe a person who clearly
states the main point of their speech at the beginning.
It is also used to describe someone who
clearly states the main idea of their writing at the beginning.

have you gained from this story?

開宗明義(Explanation of purpose and
significance.)
