He forgot about morality after seeing the
There was a famous minister in China's Han
Dynasty. His name was Li Ji. There is a story about him recorded in history
books.
The founding king of the Han dynasty was
Liu Bang, and his wife was called Lü Zhi. After Liu Bang died, his son
succeeded him as the second king.
Lü Zhi took control of the central Han
Dynasty government. She arranged for her relatives to serve in various official
positions, and her family held great power.
Following her death, many of the ministers
who had helped Liu Bang establish the Han Dynasty secretly planned to take
action. They planned to arrest the members of her family who served in the
central government. They wanted to return control of the central government to
the second Han king.
One of Lü Zhi's nephews, Lü Lu, controlled
an army. The ministers who had helped Liu Bang establish the Han dynasty
believed that he was the main target for arrest.
Li Ji and Lü Lu were good friends. The
ministers captured Li Ji's father. They said to Li Ji,
'You must help us arrest Lü Lu. If you
don't agree, we will kill your father.'
Li Ji was forced to help the ministers who
had helped Liu Bang establish the Han dynasty.
In 180 BC, Lu Lu was arrested and killed.
Many people blamed Li Ji after hearing
about this incident.
They thought he shouldn't have betrayed his
friend.
Ban Gu, a famous historian of the Han
dynasty, expressed his opinion on this incident.
Ban Gu, a renowned historian from the Han
dynasty, shared his thoughts on the incident. He believed that Li Ji's main
reason for betraying Lü Lu was to save his father's life. Another important
reason was that Li Ji also believed that control of the central government
should be returned to the Han dynasty king.
Based on these two reasons, Ban Gu believed
that Li Ji should not be blamed for disregarding morality and betraying his
friend.
This idiom literally means that he forgot
morality after seeing the benefits.
Dear friends, what inspiration do you take
away from this story?
Have you ever betrayed a friend? Have you
ever been betrayed by them?
I hope this story gives you a fresh
perspective.
(He forgot about morality after seeing
the benefits.)
