Remove the old and arrange the new.(除舊佈新)
The history books of the Kingdom of Lu in
China tell the story of an event that occurred in the winter of 535 BC.
One night, a huge comet streaked across the
sky. After passing through a star representing fire, it moved westwards towards
the Milky Way.
In ancient China, the appearance of a comet
was considered an ominous sign, and several astrologically-minded ministers
offered their interpretations of the comet's appearance.
One minister, Shen Xu, said:
'The comet represents the removal of the
old and the establishment of the new.
Its appearance signifies destruction, but
there is no need to worry because destruction can create a new order.' Based on
the direction and size of the comet, I predict that a major fire will occur in
China in the near future, although I cannot specify where.'
An astrologer from the Kingdom of Lu named
Zi Shen agreed with Shen Xu's assessment and elaborated further. 'According to
my professional inference, the four most likely locations for this great
disaster are the Kingdoms of Song, Wei, Chen and Zheng.' These four kingdoms
were primarily located within present-day Henan Province.
Zi Shen also calculated the likely date of
the fire.
A few days later, Bi Zao, a minister from
the Kingdom of Zheng, heard Zi Shen's prophecy and became deeply concerned. He
presented his proposal to the King of Zheng at a state meeting.
Zi Shen of the Kingdom of Lu said that four
kingdoms were likely to experience a devastating fire, one of which was Zheng.
I believe we should release our kingdom's
treasured jade artefacts and hold a grand sacrificial ceremony.
We should sincerely pray to the heavens to
prevent this disaster from happening to us.'
After Bi Zao expressed his opinion, another
minister named Zi Chan offered a different view.
Zi Chan said: 'Since we know a major fire
is imminent, our priorities right now should be to conduct comprehensive fire
inspections throughout the kingdom, raise public awareness of fire prevention
and prepare emergency response personnel.'
I believe these tasks should be prioritised
now, as they are more important and meaningful than offering sacrifices.
This idiom literally means to remove the
old and prepare for the new.

(Remove the old and arrange the new.)
