The braying of donkeys and the barking of
During the Northern and Southern Dynasties
period in China, the Southern Liang Kingdom had a famous minister and writer
named Yu Xin. His story is recorded in history books.
Following the end of the Jin dynasty, China
descended into a prolonged period of chaos.
From 439 to 581 AD, five dynasties passed
through northern China: the Northern Wei, the Eastern Wei, the Western Wei, the
Northern Qi and the Northern Zhou.
Meanwhile, from 420 to 589 AD, four
dynasties passed through southern China: the Liu Song, Southern Qi, Southern
Liang and Southern Chen.
Yu Xin lived during this chaotic era.
A minister of the Southern Liang Kingdom,
he was assigned as an ambassador to the Western Wei Kingdom.
In 554 AD, the Western Wei launched an
attack on the Southern Liang. Following a series of victories, the Western Wei
army captured the Southern Liang capital that winter.
Following the fall of the Southern Liang
Kingdom, Yu Xin was forced to remain in the Western Wei Kingdom.
He was also a renowned writer of the time.
Rather than killing him, the Western Wei king appointed him to the central
government.
He remained in northern China until his
death.
When he first arrived in the Western Wei
Kingdom, many northern writers and intellectuals looked down on him, but he
paid no mind.
One day, he presented an exceptionally
well-written essay that he had written. With it, he earned the respect and
attention of all southern writers and intellectuals.
When asked what he thought of northern
Chinese writers, he responded: 'Among northern Chinese writers, only the works
of Wen Zisheng are comparable to mine.' The works of two other writers, Xue
Daoheng and Lu Sidao, are worth reading.' Having read the works of all the
other so-called writers, I feel as though I am hearing the braying of a donkey
and a dog simultaneously; it is extremely uncomfortable. Reading these works
gives me that feeling.
This idiom literally refers to the sound
made by a donkey and a dog.
It is used to describe someone who writes
very badly.

(The braying of donkeys and the
barking of dogs.)
