Facing the current situation with composure.(處之泰然)

During China's Jin dynasty, there was a renowned minister. His family was one of the most powerful in the dynasty, with many of its members serving in the central government. His name was Wang Cheng, and his story is recorded in history books.

Following the Three Kingdoms period, the Jin dynasty began, divided into two phases.

The Western Jin Dynasty, from 266 to 316 AD, was centred in Luoyang.

The Eastern Jin Dynasty, from 317 to 420 AD, was centred in Jiankang.

When the Jin dynasty was first established, the nation was extremely weak.

In order to strengthen internal rule and defend against nomadic invasions, the Jin king divided the territory of the Jin dynasty among eight vassal states. These states were given their own armies and revenues.

While this decision brought temporary stability to the dynasty, it also created significant risks later on.

From 291 to 306 AD, eight vassal states within the Jin Dynasty, along with the king of the central government, engaged in intense political infighting for leadership of the central government for a period of 16 years.

From 304 AD onwards, five ethnic groups in northern China exploited the internal turmoil within the Jin Dynasty by launching relentless attacks and invasions.

In 316 AD, the Former Han Kingdom, which had been founded by nomadic people in northern China, captured the capital of the Western Jin Dynasty once again. The king was killed and the dynasty fell, with much of its territory north of the Yangtze River also being occupied by the Qianr Han Kingdom.

To escape the chaos, many Western Jin Dynasty officials and civilians fled to southern China.

Wang Cheng was one of the officials who fled the capital.

He and his family faced many dangers on their journey. They could not travel by horse and had to walk. At the time, many refugees resorted to banditry to survive, robbing supplies. They also had to find ways to defend themselves against these plundering bandits.

Every refugee was terrified, their hearts filled with sorrow and worry.

Unlike anyone else, Wang Cheng led his family and loved ones in their escape.

He remained composed and handled the situation well. There was no fear visible on his face; his expression was firm and his demeanour natural. He exuded a powerful sense of stability, providing reassurance to his family.

He guided them through numerous hardships, ultimately reaching the southern bank of the Yangtze River in what is now Pizhou City in Jiangsu Province, China.

Once they were safely in the south, he and his family climbed a high mountain and gazed across the vast river towards the northern shore.

Looking at the beautiful scenery on the northern bank, Wang Cheng realised that he might never return to his hometown, where he had grown up, having fled to southern China. His tense emotions suddenly relaxed and tears streamed down his face. He sighed and spoke. 'I've known the adjective "sad" since I was a child and have heard it used by many people.

But it wasn't until now that I understood the feeling it conveys.'

This idiom literally means facing and handling a situation with composure.

It is used to describe someone who faces difficulties with a calm and collected attitude.

(Facing the current situation with composure.)
