During China's Jin dynasty, there was a
famous minister. His family was one of the most powerful in the dynasty, with
many of its members serving in the central government. His name was Wang Zhan.
History records a story about him.
He was tall — nearly 190 cm — with a high
forehead and a large nose. He was quiet and unsociable, and his relatives
considered him dull.
However, Wang Zhan's father disagreed with
the other relatives' views of him. He thought he was a very special person and
they had a close relationship.
After his father's death, Wang Zhan
observed a three-year mourning period according to ancient Chinese ritual. Once
the period was over, he lived alone in a small, thatched-roof house next to his
father's tomb. There, he studied and meditated, avoiding all social activities.
Wang Zhan's nephew was named Wang Ji. He
was exceptionally handsome and skilled in horseback riding and archery. He was
also well-versed in the I Ching and the works of Laozi and Zhuangzi. His wife
was a Jin Dynasty princess. He was confident in his abilities and considered
himself superior to others.
He looked down on his uncle, believing him
to be foolish.
One day, Wang Ji and his uncle had a very
deep conversation about the I Ching. The conversation lasted from day to night
and eventually stretched over several days.
Afterwards, Wang Ji's perception of his
uncle changed completely. He told his uncle, 'You are a master of the I Ching.
The insights and perspectives you offer are unlike anything I have ever heard
before. You are a truly wise man.'
Wang Zhan smiled as he listened to Wang
Ji's praise, neither denying nor acknowledging it, and his expression remained
perfectly natural.
That day, their conversation about the I
Ching came to an end, and Wang Zhan politely saw Wang Ji off.
As they left Wang Zhan's house, they saw
the horse that Wang Ji had ridden. He pointed at it and asked Wang Zhan,
"Is this a very good horse? But it's very difficult to control."
'Can you ride a horse?' Are you a good
rider? If so, would you like to try riding my horse?"
Wang Zhan replied with a smile.
'I only know a little about riding and
handling horses, but I'm happy to take this one on.'
Having said this, Wang Zhan took the reins
from Wang Ji.
He jumped onto the horse's back, briefly
familiarised himself with it, and began steering it. He whipped the horse
forward and backward, his movements graceful and smooth, showcasing his
exceptional handling skills.
A few minutes later, he dismounted and handed
the reins back to Wang Ji.
Wang Ji looked at Wang Zhan with
admiration.
'Your handling skills are the most
impressive I've ever seen. Your talents are so diverse. You're truly amazing. I
have the deepest respect for you.'
This idiom literally means 'from day to
night'.
It is used to describe someone who does the
same thing continuously, day in, day out.

王湛的哥哥的兒子的名字叫做王濟。
王濟長得非常的帥又很擅長騎馬與射箭，他還熟讀易經和老子與莊子的著作，他的妻子是晉王朝的公主，他對自己的能力充滿了信心，他覺得自己比其他人都優秀。
王濟瞧不起他的叔叔，他認為王湛是一個愚笨的人。
因為一次偶然的機會，王濟與他的叔叔進行了非常深入的交談，他們交談的主題聚焦在易經這本書。這場交談從白天一直連續到晚上，這場交談最後延續到了好幾天。
這次交談後、王濟完全改變的自己對叔叔的刻板印象，他對他的叔叔說，你是一個易經大師，你所提出的見解與觀點我以前從來沒有聽過，你是一個真正的有智慧的人。
王湛微笑地聽著王濟對他的讚美，他沒有否認也沒有承認，他的表情非常的自然。
他們兩個人針對易經所開展出來的對話結束的那一天，王湛很有禮貌的送客。
他們兩個人走出了王湛所住的房屋，他們兩個人看到王濟所騎的那匹馬。
王濟指著自已的馬對王湛說。
我這匹馬是一隻非常棒的嗎?可是這匹馬非常的難以駕馭。
請問你會騎馬嗎?你騎馬的技術好嗎?你如果會騎馬的話，你想要挑戰期看看我這匹馬嗎
王湛微笑著回答。
我只懂得一點點如何騎馬與駕馭馬的技巧，我很樂意挑戰這匹碼
王湛說完這些話後，就從王濟的手上接起馬的韁繩。
王湛躍上馬背後稍微熟悉了一下就開始駕馭著這匹馬，他揮舞著馬鞭帶著這匹馬前進與後退，他的動作非常的優雅與俐落，他駕馭馬的技巧非常的高超。
幾分鐘後，王湛下馬並把韁繩交還給王濟。
王濟用很敬佩的眼神對王湛說。
你駕馭馬匹的技巧是我看過最厲害的，你的才華太多元了，你真的太厲害了，我的心中對你感到由衷的敬佩。
