The passage of time feels like a flowing water.(光陰似水)

During the Southern and Northern Dynasties period in China, there was a famous minister and writer named Yan Zhitui.

He wrote a book in which he shared his life experiences with his children. This book was widely loved and circulated, and many of its ideas still have a profound impact on Chinese people today.

Confucius once told his students:

'If you study knowledge diligently, you will reap many benefits from it.'

Many people were deeply moved by this saying and began to study diligently.

However, among these diligent learners, some misunderstood their focus, resulting in poor results and no real benefit from their learning.

Ancient China has left behind many classic books.

These books teach people correct moral values and various ways of interacting with others. When studying these classics, I believe we should avoid delving excessively into the source of every sentence or analysing the meaning of each word.

Instead, we should focus on applying what we learn from these books to our lives. Only by doing so can we truly reap the benefits of reading and cultivate strong interpersonal relationships.

I have seen some scholars devote their energy and attention to researching the places where Confucius lived or the trivial details of his life. They hope to prove their superiority by possessing obscure, unhelpful knowledge that others do not have.

I find these scholars' actions and mindset not only ridiculous, but also a waste of their precious lives.

Each of our lives is short. Time passes like flowing water and we cannot relive any of our minutes. We must cherish time, because it flows onward and never returns.

I hope you won't make the same mistake as those ridiculous scholars. Always remind yourself that the purpose of learning is to improve your character and relationships with others day by day.

If you do this, I'll be proud of you.

This idiom means that the passage of time feels like a flowing water.

It is used to describe how quickly time passes.

Dear friends, what insights or thoughts have you gained from this story?

What is your purpose in learning? Have you ever made the same mistakes as the scholars in the story?

I hope this story will provide you with some new insights.

(The passage of time feels like a flowing water.)
