A Leisurely Cloud Floating in the Sky and a
Wild Crane Flying Through the Heavens(閒雲野鶴)
During China's Yuan dynasty, there was a
famous Taoist priest named Feng Zunshi.
He was a master poet with a profound
insight into life. His poems contain profound mystical principles and
transcendental artistic concepts. The gist of the first half of one of his
poems is as follows:
In what felt like eternal silence, and
without any external help, I suddenly grasped the truth about why we live.
From that day on, I began to wander,
travelling to various places with a certain degree of ignorance and
spontaneity.
I felt like a leisurely cloud floating in
the sky or a wild crane soaring through the air. I lived a life of complete
freedom, as if time had lost its grip on me.
I relished the touch of moonlight and
gentle breezes, feeling completely relaxed and content. When I'm in a good mood,
I sing; when I'm tired, I lie down to rest. My actions were completely
autonomous and in accordance with my own will.
Sometimes I think back on my past life,
remembering the paths I've travelled and the things I once cared about.
Everything that once disturbed my mood now
seems like withered flowers and drifting catkins, never to return.
Everything that once disturbed my mood has
quietly dissipated, like distant flowing water and mist.
Only peace remains within me now.
This idiom literally means 'a leisurely
cloud floating in the sky' or 'a wild crane soaring in the air'.
Nowadays, this idiom is often used to
describe a very free person: someone who is completely unconstrained; someone
who comes and goes as they please; someone who is unfettered by human
relationships and worldly concerns.
Dear friends, what feelings or thoughts arise in you after listening to this poem?
Have you ever felt the urge to
wander? Have you ever travelled without a plan or a specific destination?
I hope this poem inspires you to discover
something new.
(A Leisurely Cloud Floating in the Sky
and a Wild Crane Flying Through the Heavens)
