During China's Yuan dynasty, there was a
famous playwright named Guan Hanqing.
He wrote over 60 plays throughout his
lifetime, covering a wide range of subjects. Through his works, he reflected
the various phenomena and realities of contemporary society.
One of his plays featured a heroine named
Tan Ji'er and a hero named Bai Shizhong. This play also featured a villain
named Yang Yanei.
Bai Shizhong was a central government
official assigned to Tanzhou as mayor.
He met Tan Ji'er through his aunt's introduction.
After they married, they settled in Tanzhou.
Tan Ji'er was extremely beautiful, and
after becoming a widow, she was pursued by many.
Yang Yanei was feared, powerful and
tyrannical. His family held great influence within the central government, enabling
him to enter and serve as a mid-level official. When Yang Yanei heard that Tan
Ji'er had married Bai Shizhong, he was consumed by jealousy and anger.
To snatch Tan Ji'er away from Bai Shizhong,
Yang Yanei slandered him in front of the king.
The king believed Yang Yanei and angrily
told him, "Here is a sword and a plaque representing me. I give them to
you.
I authorise you to secretly investigate
this matter in Tanzhou City. If your relatives' accusations are true, I will
remove the current mayor of Tanzhou and punish him severely.
If necessary, you can order the death
penalty for Bai Shizhong on my behalf."
After hearing the king's words, Yang Yanei
happily travelled to Tanzhou City.
However, he had no idea that his evil plot
had been leaked to Bai Shizhong's mother.
Bai Shizhong's mother immediately ordered
an elderly servant to travel to Tanzhou City and inform him of the news.
Upon reading the letter she had written,
Bai Shizhong was horrified.
Realising that he would be executed
immediately upon Yang Yanei's arrival in Tanzhou, he was unsure how to deal
with this serious situation and sat alone in his office, stunned.
Tan Jier, a perceptive and intelligent
woman, noticed that something was wrong with her husband, so she asked him,
'You look strange. What happened? Why are you so serious?'
Bai Shizhong looked at Tan Jier; anxiety
filled his face. He read her the letter he had received from his mother.
This idiom literally means 'a sword representing
the king' and 'a plaque representing the king'.
It is used to describe a token of power.

他寫的諸多作品中，有一部作品的女主角的名字叫做譚記兒，男主角的名字叫做白士中，這部戲中有一個反派人物，這個反派人物的名字叫做楊衙內。
白士中是一個中央政府的官員，他被派任到(潭州)市當市長。
白士中經由他的姑姑的介紹認識了(譚記兒)，白士中與譚記兒結婚後，他們兩個住在潭州城。
譚記兒長得非常漂亮，所以她成為寡婦後很多人追求她。
楊衙內是一個令人畏懼的權貴惡霸，他的家族在當時的中央政府內有的極大的勢力，他也因此進入了中央政府內擔任一個中級官員的職務。
當楊衙內聽到(譚記兒)跟(白士中)的結婚的消息之後，他非常的忌妒而且憤怒。
楊衙內為了要把譚記兒從白士中的身邊搶過來，所以他在國王面前毀謗與抹黑白士中。
國王相信了楊衙內的話，國王很憤怒地對楊衙內說。
這裡有一把代表我的劍與一塊代表我的牌子，我把這兩件東西交給你。
我授權你到(潭州)市去祕密地調查這個事件，如果你的親人說的這些話是真的，那麼我會立刻免除現任(潭州)市長的職務，並且用最嚴厲的罪刑來處罰現任的(潭州)市長。
如果有必要，你可以直接代表我下令判處白士中死刑。
楊衙內聽到國王的話後，他很開心地前往潭州市。
但是楊衙內沒有意料到，他的這個邪惡的計謀外洩了，白士中的媽媽得知了這個陰謀。
白士中的媽媽就立刻下令要求家中的一個老僕人前往(潭州)市向白士中通報這個消息。
白士中看完他的媽媽寫給她的信後，他非常的震驚。
他知道當楊衙內到潭州之後自己就會被立刻處死，他不知道該怎樣面對這個巨大的危機，他獨自在他的辦公室中呆呆地坐著。
心思很細膩又很聰明的(譚記兒)覺察到自己的丈夫的異樣，她問白士中。
我覺得你的樣子很奇怪，到底發生了什麼事呢?為何你的表情如此嚴肅呢?
白士中看著(潭記兒)，他的臉上表現出焦慮，他把他所收到他媽媽所寫的那這封信念給譚記兒聽。
