a famous scholar named Chu Renhuo. He loved reading from a young age and
maintained this habit until old age.
He had a habit of writing down interesting
and noteworthy stories and anecdotes from the books he read. He later compiled
these notes into a book and published it.
This notebook contains a passage from a
poem written by an unknown poet during the Yuan dynasty.
The poem's general meaning is as follows:
Forget it! I won't try anymore. From today
onwards, I will indulge in fun and entertainment.
The world of bustling excitement and
temptation is so vast.
I don't want to be like Tao Yuanming of the
Eastern Jin dynasty, who bowed to those in power for a meagre salary.
Nor do I want to be like Han Xin of the Han
Dynasty, who endured the humiliation of crawling under someone's crotch for a
morsel of food.
Instead, I want to emulate Shao Ping of the
Han Dynasty, who was talented but chose to become a farmer and lead a simple,
stable life.
I could also emulate Yan Junping, a wise
man from the Han Dynasty who made a living from fortune-telling and led a free
and happy life.
