This villain first appeared in the second
chapter of the play. He was a formidable and powerful tyrant. His family held
considerable influence within the central government, enabling him to secure a
position as a mid-level official.
He fell in love with a widow named Tan
Ji'er and pursued her passionately, but to no avail. Upon hearing that Tan
Ji'er had married an official named Bai Shizhong, he was consumed by jealousy
and anger. He told himself, 'There's a saying that a man of noble character
should possess strong emotions and act ruthlessly.' I am such a man, and I will
do whatever it takes to win Tan Ji'er away from Bai Shizhong."
After much deliberation, Yang Yanei decided
to slander and discredit Bai Shizhong.
As his family members held considerable
influence within the central government, he frequently met with the king at
various meetings. He always behaved humbly and respectfully towards the king,
which earned him considerable trust.
One day, he seized an opportunity to speak
to the king.
'I have several relatives living in Tanzhou
City.
They told me that the current mayor is a
corrupt official. He is addicted to women and alcohol, and he is handling
Tanzhou's municipal affairs carelessly. Under his leadership, public security
in Tanzhou is deteriorating day by day.'
The king was furious when he heard Yang
Yanei's words. He told him, "I authorise you to secretly investigate this
incident in Tanzhou City. If your relatives are telling the truth, I will
remove the current mayor of Tanzhou from office and punish him severely."
Overjoyed at the king's response, Yang
Yanei left the capital for Tanzhou City the next day.
The mayor of Tanzhou whom Yang Yanei had
slandered was Bai Shizhong.
