Red peach blossom and green willow leaves.(桃紅柳綠)
During China's Tang Dynasty, there was a
famous minister who was also a renowned painter and poet. His name was Wang
Wei.
A devoted Buddhist and long-time
vegetarian, he dressed simply.
After his wife's death, he never remarried,
choosing to live alone.
Despite being a highly important official
in the Tang dynasty's central government, he kept his household very simple.
Every day after work, he would chant Buddhist sutras at home. He had several
close friends who were monks.
He wrote a poem describing his simple life,
the gist of which is as follows:
Glistening raindrops still lingered on the
red peach petals.
A thin mist from dawn swirled among the
emerald green willow leaves.
My servants hadn't yet cleared the
courtyard, leaving it littered with colourful petals fallen in the rain. The
song of a yellow oriole rings out from outside the window, yet my guest, who
has come to live in the mountains, remains undisturbed and sound asleep.
This final line is often interpreted as
referring to Wang Wei himself as the sleeping figure, expressing his Zen-like
oneness with nature.
However, I personally believe that the
sleeping figure is a guest in Wang Wei's home. Wang Wei uses this guest, who is
still awake, to contrast his own joy in enjoying the quiet, slightly lonely
morning alone.
This idiom literally means 'red peach
blossoms and green willow leaves'.
It is used to describe the vibrant colours
of spring.
Dear friend, what are your thoughts or
feelings after hearing this story?
Have you ever been on holiday in the
mountains? How long has it been since you experienced deep, peaceful sleep?
I hope this story will give you some new
insights.
(Red peach blossom and green willow
leaves.)
