famous poet named Liu Yong whose life story was rather unusual.
He failed the imperial examination that
would have made him an official in the central government. Unable to apply his intelligence
for the benefit of the country and its people, he felt like a failure.
He used simple language to express his
deepest and most sincere feelings. During his lifetime, his poems were loved by
commoners and nobles alike, and he enjoyed great fame and influence. In this
sense, his life is considered extremely successful.
When he was young, he took the imperial
examination but failed. Deeply discouraged and disappointed, he wrote his first
widely circulated poem.
The second half of this life-changing poem
roughly translates as follows:
'Let me go to the streets where many
singing girls gather. Behind the painted screens lies the one I love. How
fortunate I am! I am free and can visit the one I love at any time.
Being with that beautiful woman, with her
red skirt and green blouse, brings a feeling of intimacy that fills my soul and
body with supreme joy. My youth is fleeting, so I must seize this moment with
the one I love.
Thinking of this, I no longer feel any
regret.
I now realise that my previous pursuit of
fame and status was illusory and unrealistic. I prefer my current leisurely
state of sipping Chinese rice wine and humming poetry to passing the imperial
examination to become a central government official. This is the life I truly
desire.
According to a popular legend, the king
publicly expressed his opinion after reading this poem.
The king said:
'I decree that Liu Yong will never be
allowed to take the imperial examination again.' Since he preferred the
leisurely activity of sipping Chinese rice wine and reciting poetry to passing
the examination and becoming a central government official, why did he take it
in the first place?
This idiom literally means to sip Chinese
rice wine slowly while reciting poetry softly.
It is used to describe a state of leisurely
enjoyment and relaxation.

我現在認為我之前想要得到名聲與地位都是虛幻且不踏實的，我認為我現在這樣一邊慢慢地喝著中國米酒一邊低聲地吟唱詩歌的悠閒狀態比通過科舉考試擔任中央政府的官員更好，我認為我現在的這種狀態才是我真正想要過的生活。
民間流傳著一種說法，當時的國王讀到這首詞後公開表達他的看法。
國王說。
我要下令永遠不准(柳永)再來參加科舉考試。
他既然覺得一邊喝著一點中國米酒一邊低聲地吟唱詩歌的悠閒狀態比通過科舉考試擔任中央政府的官員更好，那他為何還要參加科舉考試呢?
