Teaching and learning are two activities
that reinforce and benefit each other within a person.(教學相長)
Dai Sheng was a prominent Confucian scholar
during the Han dynasty.
He compiled and edited numerous articles on
etiquette and Confucian thought, which he then compiled into a book called The
Book of Rites.
One chapter of this book details the role,
purpose and mission of Confucian scholars in education and the school system;
the principles and methods of teaching; the status and role of teachers; and
the relationships between teachers, students and classmates in the educational
process. A passage from this chapter reads as follows:
'If a delicious dish is placed before you,
but you don't taste it, you will never know how good it tastes.
If important knowledge is presented to you,
but you don't learn it, you will never understand its depth and the benefits it
can bring.
Only by learning new knowledge can one
discover the depth of one's former ignorance. Only by teaching others can one
realise how much more there is to learn, even in areas of knowledge that one
thought they had already mastered.
When a mature person realises that their
knowledge is insufficient, they reflect deeply and strive to learn even harder.
When a mature person is confused about what
they already know, they will push themselves to delve deeper until they
understand.
Based on the above discussion, we can
conclude that teaching and learning reinforce and grow together.
An ancient Chinese classic called the 'Book
of Documents' says that teaching and learning together produce the most
complete learning effect. I believe this supports our conclusion.
This idiom literally means that teaching
and learning reinforce and grow each other.
Dear friends, what insights or thoughts
have you gained from this story?

(Teaching and learning are two
activities that reinforce and benefit each other within a person.)
