During China's Yuan dynasty, there was a
famous playwright named Guan Hanqing.
He produced over 60 plays throughout his
lifetime, covering a wide range of subjects. Through these, he reflected the
various phenomena and realities of contemporary society.
One of his heroines was named Tan Ji'er.
The first chapter of this play contains the
following passage:
Tan Ji'er was a beautiful widow. After her
husband's unexpected death, she lived alone and became deeply depressed.
She had a good friend: the abbot of a
Taoist temple named Aunt Bai. Aunt Bai was around 20 years older than Tan Ji'er
and had practised Taoism at the temple since childhood.
Aunt Bai had a nephew named Bai Shizhong.
By chance, she heard that his wife had passed away several years ago. After
learning this, Aunt Bai wanted to bring Bai Shizhong and Tan Ji'er together.
She contrived various situations and used
different tactics to achieve this.
After much persuasion from Aunt Bai, Tan
Ji'er's initial refusal to remarry softened. She told her, "I have a
condition. If Bai Shizhong can't promise me that he can fulfil it, then I won't
marry him.'
Tan Jier continued, "I'm not a casual
woman. My decision to marry him is very important to me."
There's an old saying: 'The fragrant
hibiscus flower cannot bloom all day long; only the steadfast pine and cypress
can withstand the harsh cold of the end of the year.' We'll undoubtedly face
many difficulties and challenges together, but I hope he'll stay with me.
If a man wins a woman's heart too easily,
he may not value her. I hope that Bai Shizhong will cherish me, treat me well
and remain faithful throughout our marriage. Many famous historical figures in
ancient China were unfaithful to their wives. The most famous example is
probably Sima Xiangru of the Han dynasty. He met his wife when he was down on
his luck, and she gave up everything for him. However, after achieving fame,
Sima Xiangru was unfaithful to her.
This is what I hope he will promise me: I
want him to promise to love me forever, treat me well and stay together until
we grow old.
Bai Shizhong must agree to this condition
and guarantee that he will fulfil it; only then will I marry him.
After hearing Tan Jier's demands, Bai
Shizhong made a firm and serious promise to her. Seeing Bai Shizhong's
response, Tan Jier finally agreed to marry him.
Aunt Bai was overjoyed to see this outcome.
She smiled and said to Tan Jier,
'After you're married and enjoying your
happy married life, I hope you'll sometimes remember me — the matchmaker who
put so much effort into bringing you two together.'
In my opinion, you two are a perfect match.
You would make the perfect couple. The man is talented and the woman is
beautiful. I believe you will be very happy after your wedding.
That concludes the first paragraph. Later,
Tan Ji'er left the city with Bai Shizhong, travelling with him to Tanzhou where
they began a new life together.
The idiom literally means 'the man is
talented, the woman is beautiful'.
It is also used to describe a perfectly
matched couple or pair of lovers.

白士中必須答應我這個條件並且保證一定會做到他的承諾的，那麼我才會嫁給他。
白士中聽完譚記兒說的這些話後，他用很堅定並且慎重的態度對譚記兒許下承諾，譚記兒看到白士中的表現後，她終於答應要跟白士中結婚。
白姑姑看到這個結局後，她非常的開心，她笑著對譚記兒說。
你們結婚後，當你們享受愉快的婚後生活之後，我希望有時候你們還會想起我這個花了很多精神來撮合你們的媒人啊。。
