During the Warring States period in China, the Kingdom of Chu had a famous minister named Qu Yuan.

 

This was a time of great chaos and turmoil. Of royal descent, Qu Yuan was deeply concerned with the affairs of the Chu Kingdom and the lives of its people.

 

A man of lofty ideals, he sought to reform the Chu Kingdom's corrupt central government and bravely stood up against ministers who cared only about pleasure, power and wealth.

 

Ultimately, however, he did not achieve his goals. At the age of 64, having suffered a devastating setback, he took his own life by jumping into a river.

 

He is also recognised as China's first poet. He wrote a poem expressing his life experiences and pursuits. This poem, comprising over 2,400 characters, is considered the most magnificent lyric poem in Chinese literary history.

 

It is titled Li Sao, which literally means 'the sorrows I have suffered'.

 

In the first half of the poem, Qu Yuan describes the discouraging experiences he had in the human world. Feeling extremely depressed, he told himself, 'I shall not be defeated. I am pursuing the truth. The road ahead is still long, but I will search and explore, rising and falling, and I will exhaust all my efforts to discover the truth about life.'

 

In the second half, after leaving the sacred spiritual world, Qu Yuan journeys to the heavens, hoping to find fair judgement and reaffirm the correctness of his path there.

 

But this time, he was utterly disappointed. Entering Heaven was not as easy as he had imagined.

 

The gatekeeper looked at Qu Yuan with contempt and indifference. He refused to listen to Qu Yuan's pleas and refused to open the gates to him.

 

Qu Yuan was furious. He could not believe that a gatekeeper of such low status could prevent him from entering Heaven. Qu Yuan was also deeply frustrated. The gatekeeper reminded him of the treacherous ministers of the Kingdom of Chu.

 

He was facing the same difficulties in Heaven as he had in the human world.

 

He could only stand outside the gates of Heaven day and night, but the gatekeeper refused to open them for him or tell him how to pass through.

 

Qu Yuan expressed his feelings in this poem.

 

He asked:

 

'Why do I live in this chaotic world, where good and evil are blurred?' Why do vile people always obscure beautiful things? Why are the morally corrupt always jealous?

 

I couldn't help but shed sad tears. I felt grief. In this heavenly place, I encountered the same situation as in the human world. There were no wise leaders in heaven; just as many vile, immoral people existed there as in the human world.

 

Qu Yuan was sad not only because he could not find a wise king in the human world, but also because he could not find the justice he sought anywhere in the universe. Ultimately, this journey of exploration plunged Qu Yuan into a completely isolated and hopeless situation.

 

This idiom, when translated literally, means that the world is in chaos and that good and evil can no longer be distinguished.

 

It is used to describe a country or society with corrupt morals, where standards for distinguishing good from evil and beauty from ugliness have been lost.

屈原同時感到非常的沮喪,他感覺這個守門員就像是那些楚王國的奸詐的大臣們一樣。

他在天界遇到了跟他在人間一樣的困難。

 

屈原只能站在天界的大門外,他從白天站到黑夜,那個守門員始終不肯為他開啟天界的大門也不願意替他通報。

 

屈原在這首詩中描繪了他的心情。

他說。

為何我生活在這個世道混亂而且善惡不分的時代呢?為何那些卑劣的人們總是喜歡遮蔽美好的事物呢?為何那些道德敗壞的人們總是心懷嫉妒呢?

我不自覺的流下了悲傷的眼淚,我感到悲痛,在這個高高的天界上,我竟然遇到了跟人間一樣的情況,天界中一樣沒有明智的領導者,天界中一樣有著許多卑劣且道德敗壞的人。

 

他悲哀的感受他不僅只是在人間沒有找到賢明的君王,他在整個宇宙中也都無法找到他想要的正義。

這次的探索路途,最終卻反而將屈原推入了一個徹底的、無路可走的孤獨境地。
