Despite his immense wealth, he remained
humble and unassuming.(富而不驕)
In ancient China, there was a great leader
named Yao.
History tells a story about him.
He appointed two wise men to create a
calendar based on the movements of the sun, moon and stars, and then informed
the people of the resulting seasonal cycles.
The people used this astronomical calendar
to determine the number of days in each year and the activities to be carried
out in each season. They also used the calendar to determine the best times for
harvesting and planting.
Yao appointed various officials to lead his
team, and he and these officials worked diligently to improve the lives of the
people. Under his leadership, people's lives became more stable and happier day
by day.
They deeply respected him, praising Yao
with the following words:
'His benevolent and kind character was like
the sky, and his wisdom and intelligence were like those of a god.'
We like to be near him because he is as
warm as the sun, and we look up to him like ever-changing clouds. Although he
possessed immense wealth and supreme power, he was never arrogant, and although
he held a high-ranking position, he was never lazy or negligent.
He wore a yellow crown and a black
ceremonial robe and rode in a vermilion carriage drawn by white horses.
He promoted virtuous conduct and fostered
harmony and unity among his clansmen.
He clearly defined the responsibilities of
all officials and his government was remarkably successful; all people lived in
harmony and peace.
This idiom translates directly as
'possessing immense wealth yet remaining humble'.
It is used to describe a wealthy person
with humble virtues.
Dear friend, what inspiration or thoughts
did you gain from this story?
Who do you know who is wealthy yet not
arrogant? If you suddenly became wealthy, do you think you could remain humble?
I hope this story gives you some new
insights.
(Despite his immense wealth, he
remained humble and unassuming.)
