During the Qing dynasty in China, there was
a renowned scholar named Liang Zhangju. He specialised in studying calligraphy
and seal carving from different historical periods in China, and he was also a
renowned master of Chinese calligraphy.
Liang Zhangju was from Fuzhou in Fujian
Province, China. He was from the same town as Lin Zexu, a famous official from
that period. Liang Zhangju was ten years older than Lin Zexu and the two were
good friends.
Liang Zhangju wrote a book recording many
unique and wonderful couplets that he had seen throughout China. One such story
is recounted in this book.
In his later years, Liang Zhangju moved to
Zhejiang Province with his third son. As his son wished to work for the Qing
Dynasty's central government, Liang Zhangju wrote to Lin Zexu, asking for his
help.
Lin Zexu agreed and did his best to help
Liang Zhangju's son successfully take up his post. After completing this task,
Lin Zexu wrote a letter to Liang Zhangju containing two sentences conveying the
message: 'Your son will rise steadily in rank from this moment on, and you
should now live out the rest of your life in this beautiful place.'
Upon receiving the letter, Liang Zhangju
found the sentences auspicious and wrote back asking, 'Could you use these two
sentences to create a couplet? I would like to paste it on both sides of my
front door.'
Lin Zexu quickly wrote the couplet and sent
it back to Liang Zhangju.
Upon receiving this reply, Liang Zhangju
wrote down his thoughts on receiving Lin Zexu's couplet.
He said: 'Lin Zexu personally wrote this
couplet for me. His calligraphy and the words used are both exceptionally
beautiful. He also wrote a lengthy postscript.
After receiving this letter, I was deeply
moved, and my eyebrows raised and face beaming.
Coincidentally, I'm currently putting
together a book about couplets, and I've included Lin Zexu's in it.
The idiom literally translates as 'eyebrows
raised and face beaming'.
It is used to describe a person's joyful
and pleased expression.

中國的清代有一個著名的學者，他的名字叫做梁章钜，他專注在研究中國歷史上各個時期的書法與篆刻，他還是一個著名的中國書法大師。
梁章鉅的故鄉在中國的福建省的福州市，他跟當時一個非常著名的名字叫做林則徐的官員是同鄉，梁章鉅比林則徐大10歲，他們兩個人是很好的朋友。
梁章鉅寫過一本書，他這本書中專門紀錄了他在中國各地所看到過的特殊與精彩的許多楹聯，在這本書中，記載了一個故事。

梁章鉅收到這封信後，他覺得林則徐寫的這兩句話很吉利，他便主動回了一封信給林則徐，這封信中寫著。
你可以用這兩句話延伸出一組楹聯嗎?我想要把這組楹聯貼在我家的大門門口的兩側。
林則徐收到這封信後，他在很快的時間內就寫好了這一組楹聯然後回寄給梁章鉅。
梁章鉅收到這封回信後他寫下了他收到林則徐所寫的這組楹聯後的心情。
他說。
林則徐親自寫了這組楹聯給我，他的書法字與這組楹聯所使用的文字都非常的優美，另外他還寫了很長的一段跋文。
我收到這封信後，我覺得非常的感動，我高興到眉毛飛揚與臉色振奮。
恰巧我最近正在編一本有關於楹聯的書，所以我特別把林則徐寫的這組楹聯收錄在這本書中。
