The Soul Seems to Have Left the Body(魂不附體)
In late Ming-Dynasty China, there was a
famous writer named Feng Menglong who compiled a collection of short stories.
This collection of stories includes one
about ghosts.
The protagonist of this story is Wu Hong.
Wu Hong lived in the Song dynasty. He was
born in Fuzhou in Fujian Province and was 22 years old.
He opened a private school in the capital.
Through the introduction of an old woman named Wang, he quickly decided to
marry a very beautiful girl.
A few months later, it happened to be the
Qingming Festival.
On this day, he went to the outskirts of
the capital with a friend named Wang Qi to sweep the tombs. Afterwards, they
drank Chinese rice wine and ate together in the suburbs.
As they were about to return to the city,
they were caught in a downpour. They saw a Chinese archway in front of a
cemetery and took shelter under it, waiting for the rain to stop. Several tens
of minutes later, the two men witnessed a strange sight: someone dressed in
ancient clothing hopped into the cemetery. They saw this person stand before
one of the graves and shout. The soil on the grave shifted to the sides and the
corpse inside rose to its feet. It then followed the figure out of the
cemetery.
The two men were terrified. After seeing
the figure and the corpse leave, they fled the Chinese archway immediately.
They ran frantically along the road, nearly
slipping several times due to the wet, slippery surface. After running for
about ten minutes, they saw a dilapidated temple ahead. They immediately hid
inside and bolted the door shut, which made them feel slightly safer.
But then something even more unexpected
happened. Shortly after hiding in the temple, they heard a knock at the door.
Then a woman's voice spoke from outside.
'Wang Qi, are you and my husband in this
temple?' It's very late and I'm worried about him. Is he with you?'
Wu Hong recognised the woman's voice as his
wife's, but knew that she couldn't possibly be outside the temple at that time
of night. Therefore, he knew the woman outside must be a ghost. He covered Wang
Qi's mouth to prevent her from answering.
The woman outside knocked several more
times and tried to push the door open, but there was no response. Finally, she
left.
Wu Hong and Wang Qi carefully pushed open
the temple door. After confirming that there was no one outside, they
immediately left the temple. The rain had stopped, and they continued walking
along the road carefully.
Looking up at the moon, they realised it
was already past four in the morning. Several kilometres later, they suddenly saw
a small shop by the roadside. They went in, wanting to order something hot.
Exhausted and soaked, the two of them sat down in the shop. They were about to
order when they were stunned by the sight of the shopkeeper. His chest didn't
rise and fall with his breath. They were terrified, as if their souls had left
their bodies. Suddenly, a gust of wind blew past, and they realised that the
shop had been a hallucination and that they were sitting on a grave.
This idiom literally means 'the soul seems
to leave the body'.

他的這本小說集中有一個有關於鬼怪的故事，這個故事的主角的名字叫做(吳洪)，
(吳洪)生活在中國的宋王朝，他出生在中國的福建省的福州市，他的年紀22歲。
(吳洪)在首都他開設一間個人學堂，經過一個王姓老婦人的介紹，他在很短的時間內決定就跟一個很漂亮的女孩子結婚。
幾個月後，剛好遇到了清明節。
(吳洪)在這一天與他的一個名字叫做王七的朋友一起到了首都的郊外掃墓，然後他跟王七一起在郊外喝中國米酒與吃飯。
他們兩個人起身回城的時候遇到了一場暴雨，(吳洪)與王七看到有一座墓園前面有一個中國牌坊，他們就躲在這個中國牌坊下等雨停。大約幾十分鐘後，他們兩個人看到一個奇特的景象，有一個人穿著古代的衣服，這個人用跳的方式跳進墓園中，然後這個人站在其中一個墳墓前大喊，接著墳墓上的土就開向兩側移動，接著墳墓中的屍體就站起來了，接著這個屍體跟著那個只會跳著行走的人一起離開了這座墓園。
他們兩個人非常的驚恐，他們兩個人看到那個跳著行走的人雨那個屍體離開墓園後、他們就立刻離開這個中國牌坊。
他們沿著道路一路狂奔，由於路太滑他們兩個人還好幾次差點跌倒，他們跑了大概十幾分鐘後，他們看到前面有一間破舊的小廟，他們兩個人立刻躲到這座小廟內，他們從廟中把門閂拴上，他們兩個人才稍微覺得安心一點。
但是更令人想不到的事情發生了，他們兩個人躲在小廟中後沒有多久，突然聽到了敲門的聲音。接著門外有一個女性的聲音說。
王七，你跟我的丈夫在這間小廟中嗎?現在很晚了，我很擔心他，他是不是跟你再一起呢?
(吳洪)聽到這個女性的聲音就是自己的妻子的聲音，但是他知道他的妻子不可能在這個時間出現在這間小廟外面，所以他知道外面那個女性絕對不是他的妻子，外面那個女性一定是鬼，所以他摀住王七的嘴巴不讓王七答話。
小廟外面那個女性又敲了幾次門又嘗試了幾次想要推開廟門但都沒有回應，那個女性後來就離開了。
(吳洪)與王七小心地推開廟門，他們兩個人確認了外面沒有人後，他們兩個人立刻離開那座小廟，這個時候雨也停了，他們兩個人就沿著道路小心地繼續向前走。
他們抬頭觀察月亮，他們發現這個時候已經大該凌晨四點了，他們走了幾公里突然看到路邊有一間小店，他們就走進那間小店想要點一些熱的東西來吃，全身淋濕而且非常疲累的兩個人坐在小店中，他們兩個人就想要點餐，但是當他們看到這間小店的老闆的臉時，他們驚呆了，他們發現這間小店的老板的胸口沒有像正常人一樣會因為呼吸而稍微起伏，他們兩個人驚嚇到靈魂彷彿脫離身體，突然在這個時候友一陣風吹過，他們兩個人才突然發現，剛才的那間小店是個幻覺，他們正坐在一座墳墓上。
