During the late Tang dynasty in China,
there was an official named Huangfu Mei. He wrote a book in which he recorded
incredible events that he had witnessed or heard about throughout China. One
such story is as follows:
In 873 AD, Huangfu Mei was appointed chief
secretary to the magistrate of Lushan County, now part of Henan Province in
China. His role was to assist the magistrate with various administrative tasks.
Upon arriving at his post, his first task
was to familiarise himself with the local history, culture and geography.
He discovered a small village about 30
kilometres west of Lushan County, nestled at the foot of a mountain. Within
this village was a peculiar temple. Inside the temple was a statue of a
beautiful woman with her head bowed and her brows furrowed. Seeing the statue
evoked a sense of melancholy and sorrow in viewers.
Behind the temple was a large, flat area
with three peaks, each at least 30 metres high. These unusual peaks, devoid of
vegetation, resembled Mount Hua, a famous mountain in China's Shaanxi Province.
He asked some elderly locals about the
temple's origins and they told him a story.
One night in 847 AD, a violent storm
suddenly raged, accompanied by torrential rain. A massive earthquake also
occurred that night, with numerous aftershocks continuing into the next day.
The next morning, these three peaks
appeared in the village.
For several days after the peaks appeared,
villagers who gathered firewood for a living saw a woman appear at different
times. She told them, "The Heavenly Emperor has commanded me to govern
this land, and these three peaks are proof of my authority."
"You must draw my portrait, create a
statue in my likeness and build a temple to worship me.
If you do this, I will protect you and this
land.'
After saying these words, the woman who had
appeared out of nowhere vanished into thin air.
This is how the temple came to be.
Having heard the villagers' account,
Huangfu Mei found it incredible and recorded it.

這就是這間寺廟的由來。
