a famous minister and renowned scholar named Ji Yun. He wrote a book in which
he recorded true stories that he had either heard or witnessed. One such story
is summarised below:
During the years when Emperor Yongzheng
reigned, I heard something very interesting one day.
This happened in a rural village near the
capital. A farmer raised chickens, ducks and geese to earn a living by selling
them.
One day, his geese laid eggs. After they
hatched, he saw something that horrified him: one of the goslings had two
heads. Terrified, he believed it to be a very bad omen. News of this strange
event quickly spread throughout the village. Although the farmer immediately
killed the two-headed goose, he subsequently fell seriously ill and nearly
died.
In the village where the farmer lived,
there was an intellectual. Upon hearing this, he publicly expressed his
opinion, telling all the villagers:
'We humans can have twins. I've
occasionally eaten goose eggs with two yolks. If these eggs hatch, the chicks
might grow into geese with two heads. You're all too superstitious. This is
perfectly normal. Don't panic.'
A few weeks later, Ji Yun, who lived in the
capital, also heard about it. One day, he was chatting with his nephew, who
said to him:
'I agree with the intellectual's view.
I'm quite knowledgeable about poultry
farming too. For example, if a male goose mates with a female goose and she
lays ten eggs, they will all definitely hatch successfully into goslings.'
However, if a male goose mates with two
female geese, or a female goose mates with two male geese, then usually one or
two of the ten eggs laid by these geese will fail to hatch.' This only happens
with geese; it doesn't happen with chickens or ducks.
'I think it's because they lack knowledge
that those country folk mistakenly believe a two-headed goose is an unlucky
omen,' he said.
After listening to his nephew, Ji Yun
offered his feedback, saying:
'I've also observed a very interesting
phenomenon: domesticated geese and ducks usually don't incubate their own eggs,
so farmers use hens to incubate them instead.
Why does this happen?' When did
domesticated geese and ducks lose their ability to incubate their own eggs?
When did ancient people first observe this peculiar phenomenon? Another
question that has puzzled humanity for hundreds of years is:

我對養殖家禽也很有研究，舉一個例子來說。如果一隻公鵝與一隻母鵝交配，這隻母鵝下了十個蛋，那麼這十個蛋絕對都可以順利孵出小鵝。
但是若讓一隻公鵝跟兩隻母鵝交配，或是一隻母鵝與兩隻公鵝交配，那麼這些母鵝所生的蛋中，十個中通常會有一個到兩個蛋無法孵出小鵝。
這種情況只會出現在鵝身上，如果是雞或鴨就不會發生類似像鵝的這種情況。
我認為因為那些鄉下人的見識不夠，所以他們才會誤認為這隻有兩個頭的鵝是一個不吉利的徵兆。
紀昀聽完他的姪子的話後，他也提出他的反饋，他對他姪子說。
我也觀察到一個很有趣的現象，家中養的鵝與鴨通常都不會自己孵蛋，所以農夫們要讓母雞來幫忙孵化這些鴨蛋與鵝蛋。
