Melancholy, depression and unhappiness.
Chinese people believe in a special
connection between the human body and the universe. Through specific Taoist
cultivation methods, some people can achieve a unique transformation of their
body and mind.
If someone is fortunate enough to succeed
in this cultivation, they can attain immortality.
They also believe that, alongside the world
we perceive, there are two others. One of these worlds, called the underworld,
is inhabited by the dead. The other, the Celestial Realm, is inhabited by those
who have achieved immortality.
These three worlds do not interfere with
each other, but they sometimes connect. The operating rules of these three
worlds are similar, and each has a central government that rewards and punishes
its people for good and evil.
A royal history book from the Song dynasty
contains an ancient Chinese fantasy story.
It tells the story of a girl named Lu
Miaodian who disliked eating meat and hated the taste of Chinese rice wine from
a young age. One day, when she was a teenager, she told her mother, 'The food
we eat smells terrible. This smell makes me dizzy and nauseous. Eating it is
extremely painful. If I had a choice, I wouldn't want to eat anything.'
Later, she learned a special Taoist
cultivation method that enabled one to obtain all the daily nutrients the body
needs through breathing. She slowly began to break free from the torment of
having to eat every day.
However, although she had learned to
abstain from food, she was still depressed and unhappy. When her mother asked
her why, she replied, 'We each live a very short time in this world. Even the
longest-lived person can only live to about 120 years old. If I had the
opportunity, I would like to learn how to become immortal. I want to be someone
who lives forever. I want to leave this world and live in Celestial Realm.'
Perhaps her desire was so strong that, a
few years later, she met a Taoist priest. After hearing her wish, the priest
gave her a book and said:
'This is a book with wondrous power. 'If
you can read it with a focused and reverent heart more than ten thousand times,
you will experience miraculous changes.' If you read it consistently with a
focused and reverent heart more than ten thousand times, you can become the
immortal person you desire.'
Lu Miaodian believed the Taoist priest.
From that day on, she practised reading the book with a focused and reverent
heart. After several months, however, she found that the surrounding
environment of her residence was too noisy for her to concentrate for long. So
she left her parents and moved to a mountain to live in seclusion.
She lived on this mountain for over ten
years. Her lifestyle was very simple and she had almost no material desires.
Her most important task each day was to focus on reciting this classic book.
Sometimes she experienced emotional ups and downs, but she did not become
discouraged or give up. She was determined to keep her mind pure and simple.
One day, about twenty years after Lu
Miaodian had settled on the mountain, a celestial being suddenly appeared
before her. They told her, "Your performance has passed the test. You are
now qualified to become an immortal and live in the Celestial Realm."
"I have a pill here. If you eat it,
you can come with me to the Celestial Realm."
Lu Miaodian finally realised her dream.
This idiom translates directly as
'sorrowful, depressed and unhappy'.
It is used to describe a person who is
sorrowful, depressed and unhappy.

悒悒不樂(elancholy, depression and unhappiness.)
