A high-ranking official in the central
government was missing an arm.(折臂三公)
There was a famous general in China's Jin
Dynasty named Yang Hu.
History records his story.
One day, Yang Hu met a feng shui master.
After showing the master his father's tomb, he received an unexpected comment
from him.
The feng shui master said:
'The location of this tomb is excellent. I
believe that the descendant of the person buried here will become a king and
establish a new dynasty.'
Upon hearing this, Yang Hu was terrified.
He knew that if the king of the Jin Dynasty
heard this prediction, he and his entire family could be killed.
He had to act immediately to eliminate this
threat. With his power, it wouldn't be difficult to make the feng shui master
disappear, but he was kind and virtuous; he couldn't bring himself to kill an
innocent person.
After careful consideration, he made a
decision. He ordered his soldiers to take shovels and other tools and disturb
the terrain around his father's grave. Without killing the feng shui master, he
used this method to prevent misfortune from befalling his family.
After disturbing the terrain around his
father's grave, he summoned the feng shui master again.
Upon seeing Yang Hu's father's grave again,
the feng shui master exclaimed, "How could this grave have been disturbed?
With this grave disturbed, the descendants of the person buried here will no
longer be able to produce a king who establishes a new dynasty.'
Judging by the current state of disturbance
to the grave, I believe that a descendant of the person buried here will be
involved in an accident, possibly breaking a hand. This person will go on to
become one of the three highest-ranking officials in the central government.
Yang Hu was a brave and skilled general.
However, a few months after this incident, he suddenly fell from his horse and
fractured his hand. As the feng shui master had predicted, a few years later
Yang Hu became one of the three highest-ranking officials in the central
government of the Jin Dynasty.
The idiom literally translates as 'the
highest-ranking official in the central government who lost an arm'.
It is used to describe an accident that
happens to someone of high rank or status.
Dear friend, what inspiration or thoughts
have you gained from this story?
If you were Yang Hu, would you damage your
father's grave? Have you read any books about Chinese feng shui?
I hope this story gives you some new
insights.
(A high-ranking official in the
central government was missing an arm.)
