During the late Ming dynasty in China, a
famous writer named Feng Menglong wrote a collection of short stories.
One of these stories is about a loyal old
servant named Aji, who worked for a woman named Ms Yan.
Through his intelligence and prudence, Aji
changed the fate of Ms Yan and their two families, transforming them from
modestly well-off to extremely wealthy.
This story, written by Feng Menglong, is
set in the mid-Ming Dynasty, a time of national strength and peace.
Aji lived in a small village in Zhejiang
Province. He was over fifty years old and had worked for the Xu family for many
years.
Ms Yan's husband was Xu Zhe, who had two
older brothers, Xu Yan and Xu Zhao.
Xu Zhe died of illness before reaching the
age of 30. Following his death, his two elder brothers demanded the division of
the family property. The terms of the property division document, which was
drafted by Xu Yan and Xu Zhao, were unfair to Ms Yan. They allocated the oxen
and horses that could be used for ploughing and transportation to themselves
and gave Ms Yan the elderly Aji.
Following discussions, Aji and Ms Yan
reached an agreement: Ms Yan would provide 12 taels of silver as start-up
capital for Aji to start a business.
Aji was a very resourceful person. After
about six months, he had earned over 2,000 taels of silver.
As he felt it was risky to carry so much
money and the Chinese New Year was approaching, he decided to take the money
home to Ms Yan first.
He carefully wrapped his earnings and
placed them in his trunks. For his journey, he rented a boat and a carriage,
scheduling his travel between 9 am and 4 pm each day. He knew that criminals
typically operated during the early morning and evening when crowds were thin.
Due to his caution, it took him several
days longer than usual to return home.
Aji's wife was overjoyed to see him return.
She immediately went to tell Ms Yan. Upon hearing the news, Ms Yan felt both
joy and fear.
Why did Ms Yan have such mixed feelings? It
was because she was a kind-hearted person.
Aji had been away doing business for
several months, leaving Ms. Yan worried about his safety. She was happy that he
had returned home safely.
Trusting Aji implicitly, Ms Yan gave him
all twelve taels of silver she had available as start-up capital. However, she
didn't know if Aji had actually made any money, and therefore she was afraid.
Furthermore, Ms. Yan felt very uneasy
during this time because Xu Yan and Xu Zhao often mocked her for making the
wrong decision while Aji was away on business. When she heard that Aji had
returned, she hurried out of her bedroom and into the living room.
She saw Aji sitting in the living room,
smiling and waiting.
This idiom translates as feeling joy and
fear at the same time.
It is often used to describe the complex feeling

阿寄與顏女士經過討論之後，他們兩個人取得了一個共識，這個共識就是由顏女士提供12兩銀子當作創業資金，然後由阿寄拿著這筆創業資金去做生意。
阿寄是一個很會動腦筋的人，經過大約半年
後，他賺到了超過2000兩的銀子。
由於阿寄覺得那麼多錢帶在身上會有風險，加上時間已經接近中國新年，所以他決定先把這些錢拿回家中交給顏女士。
他把他所賺到的銀子小心的包裹並且放在他的隨身幾箱行李中，他特別租用了一艘船與馬車來當作自己的交通工具，他把每天交通的時間設定在早上九點到下午四點間，因為他知道不法份子通常會出現在清晨與夜晚這種人潮稀少的時間。
由於他很謹慎，所以他花了比平常多了好幾天的時間才回到他的家鄉。
阿寄的妻子看到他回家時非常的開心，他的妻子立刻去跟顏女士說這個消息，顏女士聽到阿寄回來的這個消息時，她在感到喜悅的同時也感到恐懼。
為何顏女士會有這種複雜的心情呢?這是因為顏女士是一個心地善良的人。
阿寄已經離開家裡去做生意好幾個月的時間了，這段時間內顏女士很擔心阿寄是否平安，她因為阿寄可以平安的回家感到高興。
顏女士基於對阿寄的信任，所以她把她所擁有的可以動用的12兩銀子全部給阿寄當作創業的資金，她不知道阿寄到底有沒有賺到錢，因此她的內心感到恐懼。
還有因為(徐言)與(徐召)在阿寄外出做生意的這幾個月內，他們常常嘲笑顏女士說她做錯了決定，所以顏女士在這段期間內一直感覺很不安，當她聽到阿寄已經回到家的消息後，她急忙地走出她的臥室走到她家的大廳。
顏女士看到阿寄正微笑地坐在大廳內等候。
