There was absolutely nothing there.(一無所有)

During the Qing dynasty in China, there was a famous writer named Pu Songling. He collected stories about ghosts and monsters that he had read or heard, and wrote them into a book containing around 500 fantasy tales.

One of these stories is as follows:

A man named Li Huidou, who lived in Yidu County in the Chinese province of Shandong, encountered something incredible, which I will recount here.

Li Huidou was outgoing and loved making friends. He would strike up conversations with strangers. He enjoyed hiking.

One day, he went hiking alone on a nearby mountain. At around noon, he suddenly saw several men sitting and chatting happily while drinking on a natural viewing platform.

He slowed his pace and passed by the men slowly, unable to resist secretly observing them out of curiosity.

One of the men drinking noticed Li Huidou secretly observing his group. He raised his hand, waved to Li Huidou and said, 'Hey brother, are you hiking alone? Are you hungry? It's almost noon, and we've prepared lots of food and Chinese rice wine. Would you like to sit down, chat, eat and drink with us?"

Seeing a man greet him, Li Huidou walked over to the group. They were all slightly drunk and enthusiastically invited him to join them.

Li Huidou thought for less than five seconds before deciding to accept their invitation. A dozen minutes later, aided by the alcohol, he quickly became very friendly with them.

He ate the delicious food and drank the wine, thinking to himself, 'I'm so lucky to have met these men today. I've made some new friends and enjoyed a great lunch. The only downside is that their Chinese rice wine isn't very good.'

About an hour after Li Huidou joined the group, one of the men suddenly pointed in terror at a man with a long face, who was about 150 centimetres tall and walking towards them on the road in the distance.

The man shouted loudly.

'Oh dear! The mountain god who governs this mountain is here! We'd better leave quickly or he'll capture us!"

After this, all the men scattered and ran away from the natural platform where they had been gathered.

Li Huidou, unaware of what was happening, ran to the hillside beside the platform too. He spotted a small hollow in the hillside and hid inside it.

Li Huidou hid in the hollow for about ten minutes. All around was quiet. He peeked out and looked around, but he didn't see anyone.

After climbing out, he returned to the natural platform where they had gathered. There was absolutely nothing there. After searching again, he finally spotted several dead lizards on a piece of tile near the platform. Next to the tile was a broken pottery jar containing urine.

This idiom literally translates as 'There was absolutely nothing there.'.

It is used to describe someone who is extremely poor and has nothing of value.

It is also used to describe a place that is completely devoid of anything.

Dear friend, what are your thoughts or feelings after hearing this story?

Have you ever encountered things that science cannot explain? Do you believe in supernatural forces?

I hope this story gives you some new insights.

(There was absolutely nothing there.)
