A hunter seizes a deer's antlers and feet simultaneously.(犄角之勢)

During the Tang Dynasty in China, there was a famous general named Li Jing whose story is recorded in historical books.

In 623 AD, a warlord named Fu Gongshi launched a rebellion. His base was located in present-day Nanjing in the Jiangsu Province of China.

The Tang dynasty emperor was Li Yuan. He appointed Li Xiaogong, a member of the royal family, as commander-in-chief, and Li Jing as his deputy. Together, they led an elite army from the capital to Nanjing to suppress the rebellion.

Having received intelligence that Li Xiaogong was leading an army to attack him, Fu Gongshi made preparations in advance. First, he ordered a general named Feng Huiliang to garrison a naval force of 30,000 men in present-day Dangtu City, Anhui Province. He also deployed numerous warships along the Yangtze River near He County in Anhui Province and arranged for an army to guard and control several kilometres of the river.

Having completed these preparations, Fu Gongshi was pleased with himself, believing that his three armies had formed the perfect battle formation.

When the enemy charged into his battle formation like a deer, his three armies would be like three hunters, with one grabbing the antlers and the other two grabbing the legs.

A hunter seizes a deer's antlers and feet simultaneously , he believed his army could easily subdue and defeat the enemy.

Upon receiving this tactical intelligence, Li Xiaogong immediately convened a military conference with his generals.

Several generals proposed to Li Xiaogong:

'We should find a way to bypass the enemy's trap. We should send an elite force to attack Fu Gongtu's base in Nanjing directly.'

Li Xiaogong thought this proposal was excellent and intended to adopt it.

At that moment, Li Jing offered his opinion. He said:

Fu Gongtu and his generals are all highly intelligent and experienced military leaders. However, if we bypass Anhui Province in the middle reaches of the Yangtze River and attack Nanjing City in the lower reaches, it is likely that we will be attacked from both sides. Therefore, I disagree with this suggestion.

Instead, I believe we should adopt the strategy that the enemy thinks we are least likely to choose: a full-scale attack on Feng Huiliang's naval force of 30,000. This army has the clearest advantages in terms of combat strength and terrain. Defeating this army and capturing Dangtu City in Anhui Province, which they currently control, would crush their will to fight in one fell swoop.

Because Li Jing's views have always been accurate, she eventually persuaded all the generals and commanders. Following he plan, they quelled the rebellion launched by Fu Gongtu in just a few weeks.

This idiom translates directly to a situation where a hunter simultaneously grasps both the antlers and legs of a deer.

It is used to describe two people coordinating to attack the enemy from both sides.

Dear friend, what inspiration or thoughts did you gain from this story?

If you were commander-in-chief, would you accept Li Jing's advice? When formulating an action plan, have you considered whether your capabilities and resources can support it?

I hope this story gives you some new insights.

(A hunter seizes a deer's antlers and feet simultaneously.)
