A warm, gentle atmosphere(一團和氣)
During the Song dynasty in China, there
were two renowned brothers: Cheng Hao and Cheng Yi. They were renowned thinkers
and Confucian scholars, and had many students.
The brothers had distinctly different
personalities and teaching styles. Cheng Hao was gentle and kind, while Cheng
Yi was strict and authoritative.
One of their students, Xie Liangzuo,
recalled details of Cheng Hao's life and his impressions of him:
'When I first met Cheng Hao, he said to me,
"Based on my observation of you, you
have a very open mind. You are not as constrained as most people. As long as
you are willing to conduct serious research, you will achieve great things in
the future.'
His evaluation made me very happy and, from
that moment on, I decided to dedicate myself to academic research.
On another occasion, while explaining his
understanding of the core tenets of Confucianism to us, Cheng Hao smiled and
said..." 'You are like drunkards. A drunkard is too weak to stand. To help
a drunkard up, you must apply force from both sides simultaneously. If one side
is weaker, the person will lean towards the weaker side.'
In order for you to fully grasp the
Confucian knowledge I wish to impart, I must be extremely careful to avoid any
biased thinking due to a lack of thorough understanding.
If I were to describe the impression Cheng
Hao made on me, I would say this:
He sat as still and stable as a clay idol.
His personality was very gentle. When he
spoke to us and interacted with us, we felt as if we were surrounded by a warm,
gentle atmosphere.
This idiom means 'a warm, gentle
atmosphere'.
It is used to describe someone who makes
others feel kind and gentle.
It can also be used to describe a place
with a kind and pleasant atmosphere.

(A warm, gentle atmosphere)
