He was a great general, leading troops in
foreign campaigns, and an excellent prime minister, governing the country
During the late Ming dynasty in China,
there was a famous writer named Feng Menglong who compiled a collection of
short stories.
One of these features a renowned Tang
Dynasty minister named Pei Du.
In his youth, Pei Du was extremely poor —
he had no money at all, as if he had just been robbed.
Despite his hardships, he was a very
cheerful person and maintained a positive outlook on the future.
Although poor, he was principled. One day,
he found a belt adorned with pearls, gemstones and precious jade in a temple.
However, he did not keep it. Instead, he waited in the temple until he could
return it to the young woman who had lost it.
The young woman was very grateful to Pei
Du. She asked his name and said, 'If I have the opportunity in the future, I
will definitely do my best to repay you.'
Pei Du replied,
'I didn't expect anything in return for
what I did. I found your lost item and returned it to you — it's simply what I
should do." Therefore, I don't think you need to repay me in any
way."
After saying this, Phitu left the temple.
About a week later, he encountered the
fortune teller he had met on the road a few weeks earlier.
The fortune teller was sitting on a chair
behind his stall. He looked up and saw Phitu walking past his stall. Suddenly,
he stood up, approached Phitu quickly and pulled him close to examine his face
closely.
Phitu was startled by the fortune teller's
actions. "Why did you suddenly grab me?" he asked the fortune teller.
The fortune teller replied excitedly,
'What has happened to you these past few
days? It's so strange; I can't believe it.'
A few weeks ago, when I saw your face, I
could see that you were going to encounter a great calamity within a few years
and die in an accident.
But when I see you again today, all the
signs of misfortune on your face have disappeared.
Judging by your current appearance, you are
destined to become a great minister in our country, enjoying high prestige and
power.
After hearing this, Fei Du smiled and said
to the fortune teller,
'If what you say is true, then that's
wonderful. I don't know why you've made this new judgement, but I sincerely
hope your prediction comes true.'
After saying this, Fei Du left the fortune
teller's stall.
A few years later, the fortune teller's
prediction came true. Fei Du joined the central government of the Tang dynasty.
He was a great general, leading troops in foreign campaigns, and an excellent
prime minister, governing the country domestically. His reputation was immense,
and he became a minister who was admired and respected by all.
The idiom literally translates as follows:
'He was a great general when leading troops in battle and an excellent prime
minister when governing the country.'
It is used to describe a person who is both
literate and martial, and who is very special and outstanding.
Dear friend, what thoughts or inspiration
did you have after hearing this story?
Why do you think Fei Du's fate changed? Do
you think your daily actions will affect your future?
I hope this story gives you some new
insights.
(He was a great general, leading
troops in foreign campaigns, and an excellent prime minister, governing the
country domestically.)
