His predictions about the future almost
always came true.(億則屢中)
His name was Kong Qiu. He received the
respectful title of Kong Fuzi.
He was an exceptional teacher. He is one of
the most influential thinkers in Chinese history.
He had over 3,000 students, 72 of whom were
particularly outstanding. Stories about his disciples are recorded in
historical books.
Each of Confucius's students had their own
strengths: some were of excellent character, some were eloquent, some were
highly capable and some were suited to focused academic study.
One of these students was named Duanmu Ci.
He was eloquent and skilled in speech, and adept at business. He was also the
wealthiest of all of Confucius's students.
Confucius once commented on Duanmu Ci,
saying:
'Besides being my student, he has long been
involved in business.' He is not superstitious about fate; he has observed
price fluctuations in the market for a long time, and he makes rational
decisions.
He had an uncanny ability to determine
whether the prices of goods he wanted to invest in were above or below market
value.
His predictions about the future almost
always came true.
He would buy large quantities of goods when
their price was below market value, hoard them for a period and then sell them
when their market price had soared.
Due to his remarkably high success rate in
predicting market price fluctuations, he has made a fortune.
Some say that people of high moral
character and wisdom can accurately predict future events. I believe that
Duanmu Ci demonstrated both virtue and wisdom in his business dealings.
The idiom literally translates as 'His
predictions about the future almost always came true.'
It is used to describe someone whose
predictions about the future are consistently accurate.
It has also come to be used as a
congratulatory phrase when someone opens a shop.

(His predictions about the future
almost always came true.)
